Cake and Cupcakes Blog hop

Welcome to the Moda All-Stars Mix-it-up blog hop!

The Moda All-Stars have been sewing away with cake and cupcakes, and it’s so much fun!  When Martingale asked us to create a quilt using either Cake or Cupcake papers, I didn’t hesitate.  I love these papers!  They make piecing a quilt so easy.

Of course, they remind me of my favorite treat, cupcakes!  Who can resist a few of these while you sew?  Here’s a little tip: Buy some cake or cupcakes for your family before you start sewing with these papers, and they will be encouraging you to stitch away!

Now, the end result of all our mixing and stitching is a new Martingale book from the Moda All-Stars, featuring 16 original quilt designs from Cake Mix and Cupcake Mix papers!

You’ll find my little quilt called “Frosty Days” on page 55 of this book.  I used charm packs and cupcake papers that resulted in 6″ blocks stitched to perfection!

Here’s a close-up of my quilt showing how the two blocks intersect to create an illusion of one block continuing into the next.

Here’s the best thing about the Moda All-Stars books:  The royalties for these books are donated to different charities, and this one is no exception.  All the royalties from our newest book will go to Feeding America, and your purchase will help end hunger across our country.  You can read about this organization and the fantastic things they do at feedingamerica.org.

Of course, Moda has given us some fun prizes for this blog hop.  I’ll be giving away a copy of this book, along with some charm packs and cupcake papers.  You could win this prize if you leave a comment on this post telling me about your favorite cake or cupcake. (Do you bake your own, have a favorite bakery in your area, are they a part of your family celebrations, etc.)?  I’ll be picking a lucky winner on Saturday, the 9th, so come back here to see if you won!  I’ll post the winner below!

My favorite cake is Peter Paul Mounds cake. I’ve had it for my birthday every year since I was a little girl. It’s like the candy bar with coconut between the layers and absolutely delicious!

Congratulaltions Deb!  That cake sounds delicious!  Thanks for entering.  I’ll get your treats in the mail right away!

  • Becky

A favorite of ours is a lemon blueberry pound cake which we get at the place we pick blueberries every July. All the quilts look amazing and the book too!! My wish list just got longer…thanks for the giveaway!

This had been fun and I love the quilts in this book.  I have a bakery that makes the best cakes and cupcakes not too sweet and they are in a green marketwhomwould have thought.:)

  • Patti Levine

I love carrot cake with cream cheese frosting…mmmmm!  I make it myself as I need gluten free.  Thank you for the chance to win!!!

  • Belinda Jones

My favorite cupcakes are from a yellow box cake mix with homemade chocolate icing. I use my grandmother’s chocolate icing recipe and it is always a hit with family and friends.

  • Lolly Pasewark

My favorite cupcake is carrot cake ( with lots of orange zest and cardamom in it) with cream cheese frosting. Made by my 23 year old food science majoring son! THE best cupcakes I’ve ever had! Thanks Anne!

Chocolate cake is always the winning answer at my house!  Baked from scratch whenever possible, but a little “cake mix” help on a quilt is looking tempting.

  • Susan Smith

Well, I love cake of almost all kinds buuuut, I need to be gluten free.  And gluten free cake, even good gluten free cake just isn’t as good as other cake!  But I can eat it!  So I have a chocolate zucchini cake recipe that is dairy and gluten free and I do enjoy it.  Do that is my favorite for now.  But I love Moda cake mixes and layer cake and I can actually have those!!!

Favorite of all time at my house is the recipe I use for Gingerbread cupcakes.   Sometimes we have them with a bit of cream cheese frosting – sometimes with a dollop of whipped cream- either way, they are fabulous!

This is inspiring me to get out my Aunts Carrot Cake & Cream Cheese Frosting recipe, written in my Mother’s hand.  One of the most precious things I still have of either of them. This cake was the reason I, in my awkward Tweens, looked forward to tea and a game of Muggins at my Aunts big round table.
I love the sweet softness of your quilt.  It just looks so comforting… just like that memory.

  • Sharon Aurora

I have always baked my own either from mixes or from scratch. If you count Gobs, that would be my favorite. If not, then angel food or German chocolate.

  • Judy Chastain

After having a special coconut cake made by a niece, I had to ask for the recipe.  The cake is made with coconut in syrup, or Ancel Coconut.  I could only find the coconut in Louisiana, so I stock up when we visit family there.  I’ve made one cake mix quilt, and I love that too.  Yours, Anne, is sweet and beautiful.

  • Joyce Carter

Beautiful quilt Anne. Thank you so much for your giveaway.
My favorite cake is Coconut Cake and I love to bake it from scratch.

  • Teri

My favorite cake is one my grandmother used to make for us. It has white peppermint cooked icing with dark chocolate drizzled around the edge. Thank you for chance to win.

Love the quilt!  I’ve not yet tried these papers to make a quilt — it looks fun.  My husband’s family has a tradition of strawberry jello cake — his Mom made it for all the kid’s birthdays.  Now that she is no longer will us l, I’ve taken over the tradition.  My husband even has requested this strawberry cake for Thanksgiving this year in honor of his Mom.

  • Shelly

My favorite cake is carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I like it so much I made it for my son for his birthday. I thought everyone would love it. However when I brought it out for his birthday party. It just dawned on me my son does not like carrots. That was a big mistake!! My son forgave me but now has a story to tell on his birthdays how his mom made him carrot cake and he doesn’t like carrots!

  • Sally Christiansen

My favorite cupcake is a family recipe that we call Aaron’s Wedding Cake as a cousin had them for his wedding reception. They are chocolate with a cream cheese, walnut and chocolate chip center.

  • Carmen Montmarquet

I love many cakes, but my favorite i make is a Lemon Meringue Cake, it’s always a hit!
Love your cute quilt in the Mix It Up book.  I have never tried the cake or cupcake papers, thanks for a chance to try in this awesome give away!

I have created cupcakes for the birthdays of my 3 grandchildren for several years.  Their favorite is a simple one-bowl chocolate cake topped with buttercream frosting. The frosting colors and decorations coordinate with the theme for each birthday celebration. This is a tradition that I treasure so much. A special blessing occurred when my oldest granddaughter, now nearly 12 years old, helped to make the cupcakes for her 10th birthday. Perhaps she, her sister and their cousin will continue this legacy when they are parents and grandparents. One departure from the cupcakes for birthdays tradition was this….my mother purchased a lamb cake mold for my daughter’s first birthday. For my daughter and son and their children, I baked that special ‘lamby cake’ for each of their first birthday celebrations. Perhaps with the help of this book I can make quilts as lasting memories of these family birthday celebrations!

Favorite cupcake?   Does fluffy cupcake count?  I love them all!  I’m not a baker so I rely upon my local grocery store to do the mixing and baking!

  • Tammy

Our family has a great banana cake recipe that we haven’t made in a while.  I forgot about it!  Your quilt is lovely!  Thank you for this giveaway offer.

  • Judy Zei

Cake?  Any cake is my favorite.  I guess if I really had to choose I’d pick coconut in any form, but I have pretty much never met one I didn’t like.  Just like your designs!!!!

  • Carol

My family loves chocolate cake, but I like carrot cake the best-Mmmmm that cream cheese frosting! Love your quilt and the book!
