Christmas & Winter

Snow Birds, Freezy and Winter Wishes

When I began working on my Crystal Lane quilt, I researched “Winter” critters on Google.  I was looking for the ones that brave the cold, snow, and don’t mind a few icicles.  The ones that survive those freezing temps.  I found some pretty cute winter critters, but I fell in love when I saw the Snowy Owl.

I can tell by looking at these owls they are very wise.  No bird brains here, so to speak. You’ll find a few of these owls on my Crystal Lane quilt.  I just couldn’t resist.

Snow Birds

I’ve also featured these owls on a mini quilt I’m calling Snow Birds.

Snow Birds finishes at 24 1/2″ x 15 1/2″.  It’s perfect for a little table topper or a small quilt to hang in an entryway to welcome winter.  It makes a great gift for a special friend if you can stand to give it away when you’ve finished.  Hmmm…better make two!  This pattern will be available in January.

Freezy

Have you ever tried to name a polar bear?  Let me tell you, it’s not easy.  But, if you go back to my beginning statement, “the ones that survive those freezing temps,” I think you’ll agree that Freezy fits this polar bear.  He loves cold toes and a cold nose!  And he’ll love being at your house this winter.  Freezy is my newest petite, and he measures 3″ x 6″.  Making Freezy from wool felt makes him easy as can be.  He’s perfect for decorating a shelf or mantle for winter.  Hang him on your tree for the perfect ornament.  I recommend hemostats for turning these arms and legs.

My Freezy petite pattern is available on our website now.  You’ll also find a kit with the wool felt you need to make him.  (You just might find that bag of felt tied with the blue ribbon you see on his neck.)  Welcome, Freezy!

Winter Wishes

Do you love embroidery like I do?  Welcome to my Sweet Stitches pattern series!  The first official pattern in this series I’m calling Winter Wishes, and I’m featuring a polar bear! I’ve used some metallic threads for a snazzy look, and I’ve included tips for stitching with metallic threads in the pattern.

You’ll find everything you need, including this pattern, on our website now.  I used the Cosmo stitchers cloth for the background.  It’s a little hard to find, but we have some on our website.  It’s 100% cotton with a linen look, and I love it.  We also have a floss kit with all the embroidery floss needed.  Metallic threads are more expensive than regular floss but worth the extra dollars.  One skein of metallic floss should last through many different stitcheries.  I’ve included directions for finishing the back of your embroidery if you decide to frame it in a hoop like I did.  Winter Wishes finishes at 5″ x 5″.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

These owls are wonderful! Perfect in blue! I’ve just finished my layout for the red & white Ho Ho Ho! Lambs.  What do you recommend to be the best way to finish the raw edges?  I’m thinking to just stitch close to the edge in matching color?

I am in Colorado now and we have wild bunny rabbits everywhere. I have at least four living in my back yard. These are not like the long eared California field rabbits. These are cute little bunny rabbits that look like they got lost from somebody’s house. They don’t seem to mind the cold weather at all. When I get up in the morning from day of snow like I did this morning there are rabbit tracks all over the yard. So a logical and apropos addition to your list.

I found the thread kit for Winter Wishes on the website but cannot seem to locate the pattern or the fabric. Can you please tell me where they are? Thanks!

Your little critters are so cute! I always thought Björn or Eric would be good polar bear names. Something scandinavian for sure.

I can’t wait for your new fabrics & pattern!  Blue is my favorite color & I lived in those “freezy” temperatures most of my life!

These snowy owls are such beautiful creatures!  And even cuter when you transform them with your fabrics.  I am up to my ears in making quilts for my family for Christmas, seven done, two to go.  The one I just finished uses your Sugar Plum Christmas line, and it’s so adorable!  That said, all I can do for now is dream about your latest creations :)
