Merry Merry Snow Days

Merry Merry Snow Days Block Five

With block five we are officially half-way through our quilt!  It’s time for sledding school!  Those snowmen are really crowded on the sled, but the snow angel instructor is too sweet to make one of them get off.  So here we go, are you ready?

We’re starting with the strip of applique snow at the bottom of the block.  This piece is easy because only the top of the snow requires applique prep.  The other three sides are inserted into the seam allowance.  Pin or glue baste the hill in place and then sew on the side background fabric.  Now go ahead and applique the snow in place.  I worried that the background would show too much under this piece, but once it was quilted, I thought it was fine.

I assemble as much of the applique as I can directly on top of the pattern.  Prepare the snow angel body, wings, scarf, nose, and sign.  Then place over the pattern and trace the eyes, buttons “x’, and as much of the arms as you can. Trace the wording on the sign and pin or glue-baste the snow angel together.  Once you have the angel placed on the background, you can trace her halo.

Pin your snow angel in place and let’s go onto the three guys on the sled (ok, maybe the one in the center is a girl).  Use a “perfect circle” to make the snowman’s head on the left, assemble his parts over the pattern, trace the details, and repeat for the other two snowmen.

Place the background and pattern over a lightbox and position everything following pattern.  Pin or glue-baste in place and trace any remaining details onto the background.

Use the 1/4″ bias again for the tree trunk!.  How lucky can you get?  I hope you’re having fun making this quilt!
