Staging Those On a Roll Quilts
Have you ever thought about what it takes to get those photos when you look at a quilt book? I think one of the hardest things to do is “stage” the photos. Think about it, for On-A Roll, there were 14 different Moda designers, 14 different quilts and 14 different styles. Each designer sent a quilt and Martingale had to pull them all together for the book. Thank goodness for the creative professionals that work there. They are the ones who deserve a thank you for making us look good!
I think my favorite picture in the Moda All-Stars On a Roll book is the photo of the quilt by Janet Clare (page 46). I love the black headboard, the white bedding, and the wallpaper background. With the added touch of the roses in a basket, it’s beautiful. And I love the way the quilt is angled on the bed! Makes me want to make one!
Jennifer at Martingale told me that she was driving through the country and found a place with a chicken coop and chicks. She knew it was the perfect setting for my chicken quilt, Rule the Roost (page 62). Look at that coop and then notice the fluffy chicks in the left corner.
And the garden gate in Corey Yoder’s Apricot Jelly photo (page 56) is so pretty! The putty color that frames Corey’s blocks is reflected again on the roof and siding of the house! Genius!
Now that I’ve tempted you with these beautiful quilt photos, it’s time to announce the winners of the On a Roll giveaway! Good news! I’m giving away four copies of the book, not just two! If you find your name below, just email me your address (info@bunnyhilldesigns.com).
Marylou Wahl wrote, “I think the book looks fantastic and know I will add it to my library. Love it when there is help for charities. I head up a quilt group at our church- we make and give quilts for many needs. Know this book will give me some great quilts for all of us to make. Thanks so much!”
Paula Cansler wrote, “I LOVE Jelly Rolls as well as your Bunny Hill patterns and Moda fabrics! There isn’t a better combination and I’m looking forward to this new book! Thanks so much for sharing your love of quilting with this Arizona girl!”
Debbie Ryniewski wrote, “I must be honest I have only used Jelly rolls once. I just started a quilt which would have been perfect with the use of jellyrolls but it was a stash buster project. The cutting would have been much easier and less time consuming for sure. I now have jelly rolls implanted in my head for future projects. The chicken quilt is something that I hope to do in the near future. I hope to get my collection of roosters started again. I moved cross country and had to get rid of my 3 ft tall resin rooster, regretted it ever since.”
Pauline F wrote, “Hi Anne, I love all jelly rolls, the ones from the bakery but love them more when they come from the quilt stores. As for chickens, love them too. When we moved back to Canada we settled in Wellesley, a quaint rural town in southern Ontario and we can have chickens in our yard. Population is only 11,000. It has everything I need but a quilt store. I thought about starting one, but at almost 69 years young, it’s not going to happen. I miss my quilting friends in the USA but I am making new quilting friends in rural Ontario. I’m going to a quilt retreat in May, so excited. I’d pack a jelly roll and make the chicken quilt, would love to win a copy of, On A Roll. Thanks for the chance, Anne. 🤗 Good luck to all”
Thank you to everyone, who left a comment on my last post. I enjoyed reading all of them!

Congrats to the winners! Anne, one of my favorite things about my quilting books is the amazing photographs, they are worth gazing at over and over. I have seen some beautifully staged quilts on IG, it’s clear that many quilters take much time and consideration when photographing their creations. Thanks for sharing the photos from the book, I love the way they displayed your chicken quilt.
