Love those Jelly Rolls!

I’m in love with Jelly Rolls.  There’s just something so dang sweet about them!  Yesterday I went to the Moda web site and ta da!  My favorite Jelly Rolls appeared!  I was so surprised to see that Lily & Will were having coffee hot chocolate with Moda!

If you like to play with Jelly Rolls go to the Moda website for the new Jelly Roll Dream Challenge!  Here’s your chance to design a Jelly Roll quilt and win big!  Enter the contest and you might win a Janome sewing machine not to mention a lot of fame.    It’s “sew” easy and so much fun!  Remember you can download the fabric swatches for all the current lines on the Moda website then design away using graph paper or Electric Quilt.

I’m taking a little survey:  Are you a “waste not, want not kind of quilter” or is “time well spent” more important to you?   I have to admit I’m on the side of “time”.  I’m the one who loves to use pre-cut cream and white jelly rolls!  Forget cutting my own strips it’s just not for me.  I want to open the package and start sewing.  Which one are you?  Tell me in the comments and you could win a cream jelly roll along with a Lily & Will Jelly Roll!  I’ll tell you the winners on my next blog post!  (There is no wrong or right answer so be honest.)

Back soon!

Anne

I want very much to open the pack and sew but of course I usually cut strips from my stash. Love to own this cute jelly rolls. Chrisb.

I kind of fit both categories. I love using the precuts. They are so beautiful and fun to use with all those different fabrics, and so easy! But then I find myself trying to use up every bit of the scraps left over to make something else!
    Thanks for a fun giveaway.

  • Marj

I go both ways. When I can afford it I buy precuts, but the rest of the time I go into my stash and cut my own strips. Thanks for the chance to win some Will & Grace.

  • Vicky

I’m a “time well spent” kinda gal. Besides Moda can cut those strips much straighter than I ever could – and faster! Oh, and don’t you just love the precut dust that ends up all over your clothes! I do! It means I was playing with fabric! It’s like a badge of honor among quilters!

I try to be a “waste not, want not”, and depending on what’s going on in my life, I am. However, there are so many projects that I’m just so anxious to begin, that “time well spent” helps me get right into it without spending all that prep time. I would dearly LOVE to be the recipient of the cream jelly roll — I see a new beginning in my future!

I love pre-cuts, but more because then I get a print of a whole line than because of time savings. I don’t mind cutting out fabric. I’m a very “of the moment” quilter, doing whatever part I feel like doing at the time. I definitely don’t like to waste fabric and cherish even my smallest scraps. My favorite, favorite, favorite part is always planning the color and design, whether I use pre-cuts or not.

  • Michelle

I’m a “time well spent” quilter. I love to use precuts and definitely not a lot of fussy cuts. I want to get right to sewing and see my creation come to life.

  • dianne

uhmmm … my answer is “yes”

i don’t want to waste time OR fabric – so i like precuts AND i like yardage … using precuts is time will spent and cutting fabric is fabric well spent

  • Cynthia

I love the pre-cuts as it’s a quick way to add/build stash and get a wide variety of fabrics. Since I’m a beginner quilter I’m still figuring a lot of things out. :-)

I am definitely a waste not, want not quilter. I really think about and work out the best way to use the yardage with the biggest scraps left. I can’t describe the feeling it gives me when I am successful and have a lot of leftover fabric … just that much more for something else. :)

  • Lyn

I tend to lean towards ‘waste not, want not’ because I love scraps, but I have a large collection of charm packs because its a nice way to get a variety of small pieces fabrics for applique or charm quilts. One of the things I hate about the precuts is the pinked edges…I find a straight edge easier to cut along when I want to do precise rotary cutting. Of course, it could just be my eyes and age! I haven’t tried jelly rolls yet.

  • DeAnna

Ooooh, I love all the pre-cuts and the yardage. I’m a definite fabri-holic! I just have to have it, no matter what form it comes in.

But I must admit I have trouble opening and decimating those beautiful jelly rolls and charm packs and turnovers and layer cakes. They’re delicious just as they are. :D

  • Marcia

I love the jelly rolls and have purchased some. To be perfectly frank I have always wanted to do the math and find out how much more per yard I am paying to purchase fabric in this manner. I do agree and also love to see them sitting on the shelf all dressed up and tempting me to play. When I undress a jelly roll I keep the Moda twill tape and hang it up with the little paper tag as a reminder of what used to be in that wrapping. Just a really silly thing I started doing for no reason at all. But then aren’t quilt studios (ok, sewing room) supposed to be silly and non sensical? I think so!

  • Connie Bell

I so love the precuts! I like having most of a fabric line together to make my project. BUT. . .I really enjoy the creative process of having a fun treasure hunt for just the right fabrics for a project as well. . . and I do save my scraps! There, I admitted it!

  • Lori

I’m a new quilter and just discovered jelly rolls! My husband thinks I’m talking about donuts :) I love to be able to sew and go, without all the cutting! Oh, Lily and Will is my favorite fabric ever…love the colors.

  • Bev/Mo

Jellyrolls are my favorite! Aside of being so easy, fast and useful, they are wonderful to look at sitting on my shelves….so decorative!!! I love them…

I do love precuts but sometimes there is nothing like the feeling of cutting fabric…not that I want to cut 40 something strips…so heck yes…would love a win!!! Thanks Anne!

  • Cindy

Pre-cut fabrics are great, but when I get a jelly roll, I love the way it looks with all of the fabrics lined up for viewing the entire collection, so I don’t want to take it apart. I sometimes keep it intact just so I can admire it! If I really like a fabric, I want to by yardage. With the bigger piece of fabric, I can have strips or squares, and still have more leftover for another quilt!

  • Robin

I am in between. I love the precuts, but keep every scrap of fabric. You never know when you might need to cover a button! Thank you for the great inspiration.

  • Kenna

I’m a huge fan of precuts (only if they are cut correctly! I got my first packet of charm squares that were off….but MODA is a great company and they quickly replaced them!) I’m work full time and am a mom to a tiny person who takes up a LOT of time, so to me, I’d rather spend my precious sewing time sewing….not cutting.

I use jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm squares as often as I can! (and it’s a great way to get an entire line of fabrics as inezpensively as possible!)

  • Dana

Pre-cuts are the way to go. With busy work lives, family lives, kids and pets to care for, a girl needs every advantage she can get! Thanks for your amazing and wonderful creativity. It makes me happy!

I love pre-cuts – because I absolutely hate cutting fabric. I can’t cut a straight strip, so the jelly rolls I just love! The rest of the pre-cuts are so much fun too!. Kudos to Moda for paving the way for pre-cuts!

  • Kaaren

I would much rather dive right in than sit and cut for hours. As for waste, I tried to save my scraps because it seemed like it was the thing to do and a little sacrilegious to throw them away. I ended up with bags of little pieces of this’s and that’s and came to the conclusion that I’d never use them in a million years. I brought them to one of my guild meetings and they were snapped up lickety split. I no longer save my scraps.

Now, Ann…having written this novel, I would really love to win a jelly roll. After all, time’s a wastin’. *wink*

  • Nancy

I can be either… I love my Moda pre-cuts and use them all the time… It’s great to have a head start on the cutting just so I can start sewing straight away… It’s fun designing patterns using the sweet cuts so I’m going to visit the Moda site to check out the challenge…
However, I can also sit and stitch intricate blocks…

  • Ina

I’ll be very honest with you, Anne. I won’t buy a Moda Jelly Roll anymore. The strips are sometimes wonky…you know, a BAD cut where you get just a bit of a “V” shape. My friends have had the same experience. Honestly, for the PRICE Moda charges AND the fact that they are laser cut, this should not be happening. Shame on Moda.

  • Pat Nordahl

I am definitely a pre-cut user. Love jelly rolls, charm paks, etc and just bought my first candy bar from moda. Thought about asking for an accuquilt GO for Christmas but then think how many jelly rolls, turnovers etc I can buy for $500.00.
Love your designs and your blog.

  • Katja

I like jelly rolls, honey buns and charm packs, because they are perfect for scrappy looking quilts. Especially for small projects like mug rugs or mini quilts. They offer the possibility of getting a nice range of perfect fitting different designs for a small prize ;o)
And my selfcut strips over the whole width are mostly imperfect especially near the fold ;o)

  • Kate Linde

I don’t mind cutting, I love gadgets and lots of rulers. But there is something so alluring about the pre-cuts. I too love to rip open a package with Jelly Rolls or Layer Cakes. Begin careful not to get drool on the fabric I to see the coordinated colors and prints and start to imagine what they can become. I just bought my first book of pattern for pre-cuts and I’m always thinking how they can fit into a design.

I don’t like waste but I have to say I just LOVE Jelly Rolls and Charm Squares. Having just spent hours cutting out little bits from fat quarters, I kept dreaming of how much easier it would have been with a Jelly Roll!

  • May Kristin

I love pre-cuts, but it’s often hard to use them…what if I would regret using them on this project, may be I should have saved them for another project…? On the other hand, I think I am a little of both!

  • Colleen

I am a precut jelly roll, charm pack person. I am a challenged cutter. The rotary cutter does not like me I think. I do save scraps though:) My daughter loves to use them! Thanks!

  • Sue

I am a waste not. Keep every little scrap of fabric for hopefully another project. I do love the quick varity of the precuts though.

  • Rita Bright

Jelly roll, hands (with sticky fingers) down! No muss, no fuss. Who wants to spend time cutting when it’s done for you.
    Rita

  • Mary

Cutting is my least favorite part of quilting, so I love precuts. Moda had a great idea, that’s for sure. The other thing I like is getting a piece of the whole collection — it makes my fabric addition more controllable since I don’t have to but half yards!

  • Brita

I’m making my very first jelly roll quilt right now, and I didn’t even whimper when I merrily skipped the part where I would have had to cut all those strips!! However, I did not use a jelly roll for the background fabrics, and I grumbled about it the whole time I was cutting all those strips. Now I’m a believer, jelly rolls whenever possible!!

  • Donna

I love to save time! I work 2 jobs – 1 fulltime and 1 part time, so if I can save time by not cutting fabric….I am there! Instint gradification for me!

  • Sandy Allen

Hi! Good question! I usually do scrappy quilts, so I can cut what I want. BUT I love the ease of having strips and squares already cut for me. Guess I am a little of both, it depends on the project. :P

  • NancyJL

Love, love, love precuts. Saves time and I get the whole line of fabric. None of my LQS carry them, so I always buy mine online, always at a discounted price.

Haven’t used the solid precuts, the cost/time saved does not come out in my favor.

My all time favorite, is a fat quarter bundle. Pricey even at a discount, but can cut a jelly roll, layer cake, and some 3″ strips from each fat quarter. Then I can use them anyway I like and get some scraps too. Thanks for the giveaway, love your fabric.

  • Gale Lavers

I love using Jellyrolls and charm packages. It is so easy to just sit and sew and ENJOY without the extra time cutting. I keep some scraps, however I have someone I pass most of mine on to. There are some great patterns out there for pre-cuts and it seems more are designing around them now.

  • Kathy H

I love using the pre-cuts, but guilt usually wins out over desire, so I have been trying to use my stash as much as possible. Moda makes it so difficult! That company is such an enabler!! :) Of course, I suppose if the pre-cuts were already in my stash, it would still be stash busting to use them…
