Hexagons
I was lucky enough to have my grand-daughter Alyssa here for a few hours last week, and the two of us made all these hexies using some of the fabrics I’m using for The Splendid Sampler blocks. We had such great fun, we laughed and giggled the whole time.
Alyssa was able to cut hundreds of these hexagons using the Sizzix Big Shot machine and the hexagon die I bought. It was the first time I’ve tried it, so we watched a YouTube video first and then she started cutting.
In very little time, she had a charm pack cut into hexagons. Then I taught her how to prepare them using hexagon templates. The only thing we couldn’t do was to fussy cut. I’ll still have to do those by hand.
Alyssa wanted to try cutting wool, so we pulled some scraps and ran it through the machine. It worked great and I had a hard time getting her to quit.
I have no idea what I’ll use all these wool hexagons for, but they sure look pretty in the jars. I know these made some great memories.
Hope you’re having a great weekend!
Anne

I can’t believe Alyssa is big enough to sew with you! I imagine her to still be a toddler! What great memories! And this inspires me to get my Sizzix out! Thanks for the post!

You have inspired me to use my Sizzix, now! My most precious moments have been times spent with my granddaughter. I love the wool idea as I enjoy creating with wool. Thank you!

That was so nice that you got to spend time with your granddaughter & show her how to do hexes……I think you should sell them in your shop…..I like the pink one with the buttons!! :) Have fun making memories with your granddaughter!!

I have the Big Shot but wasn’t aware I could cut fabric with it. Oh the possibilities my mind is coming up with! I need to find some of those dies. How precious to get to spend time with your Granddaughter!

I can’t think of anything better than giggling and sewing w/ my granddaughters. We haven’t done hexagons yet, but I’m sure if I suggest it, she’ll want to dig right in. I love the wool ones too, haven’t done that yet, but what a nice idea. Enjoy the moments, Anne… as you know, they’re priceless :)

Very pretty! The next time I need hexies cut, I’ll send the stuff to her. I see a new quilt design coming using wool hexie shapes…..

Very cute and fun for both of you – great times with Grandma! I may need to try these hexagons one of these days. Maybe you can tell us what “method” you will end up using.

Time in the sewing room with granddaughters is especially wonderful and memorable. Even doing little things…I’m on blk 8 of Woodland Christmas and my 4 yr old granddaughter loved gently pulling off the appliqué pieces from the freezer paper patterns and arranging them into the background.

I learned to sew from both of my Grandmothers. I think of them both with so much fondness.

Memories like this are the best!

After you cut out the fabric hexagons with the cutter do you use papers ?
I would like to cut fabric hexagons then use papers to baste the fabric on then sew the hexagons together
I’d like my seam allowance a bit more than 1/4 as my basting of the first half of the hexagon uses more than 1/4 inch then there is not enough fabric for the second half
😇

What a great idea and how much fun you two had! Granddaughters are the best 😍

That sounds like so much fun. I so want to try some hexagon project, but as usual I haven’t had time yet.
How pretty they look in the jars though.
I’m looking forward to seeing your blocks! :D
