• APQ Quilt Along

As I walk through my house searching for anything mauve or purple, I realize I don’t own a thing.  Maybe that’s why this quilt has been so much fun.  The colors are a refreshing change for me. I added two little birds to my applique basket.  They seem to go with the vintage feel of the quilt. And then I added a border…a purple one! Borders are the hardest part of a quilt for me.  I debate over what fabric to use until I drive myself crazy. This print looked too large, and this one too small. I ended up picking this one…the scale is good and I love the…

  • Rescue Angels

On my quest to find another dog for our family, I’ve met the most AMAZING people.  Rescue Angels, I’m calling you.  You work so hard to save an endless number of animals, and your courage and faith amaze me.  What surprises me the most is how many of you there are! From Jean’s sister, who helps in the Tracy, CA area ( Animal Rescue in Tracy)  to Laila who put me in contact with the people at Animal Compassion Team  in Fresno, CA, I am in awe of the network of people who help homeless animals.  I learned of a group who help get shelter animals adopted by posting…

  • APQ Quilt Along, Applique & Quilt Top

My APQ blocks are finally assembled, the sashing and nine patches have been added and I’ve just finished my first attempt at my applique block.  Here’s block six on the design wall.  Once I decided where each block would go, I numbered them with masking tape so I wouldn’t forget. Here’s my applique block.  If you look closely you can see it’s been machine appliqued (or maybe you can’t tell).  I prefer hand applique, but often, time becomes an issue.  I can machine applique this block in about 1 hour!   I use Kimono silk thread on the top in a color that matches the applique (you can also…

  • APQ Quilt Along with some “Tone it Down” Sashing

Do you remember these quilt blocks? I have 19 of them completed and waiting for me to add sashing!  19 scrappy quilt blocks from the February, 2014 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine. Whoa baby, these blocks are a little busy!  I think it’s time for me to bring in the 9 patches…    …and some sweet, sweet sashing! The 9 patch sashing posts are from the chestnut color fabrics I used in the center of the 19 blocks.  And then came the sashing…I put the blocks on the design wall and this little dot was just what I needed to tone down those busy blocks.    It’s from…

  • Close to Home in 2014

It’s amazing to me how life works. A choice I made last year, affects things in a much bigger way than I could have imagined. All of a sudden I stand back and say “now I see, I was supposed to be here”.   I decided in September that I would stay closer to home in 2014.  The next quilt market is in Pittsburgh in May, and for the first time in my career I’ve decided to sit one out.   This was not an easy decision for me, but at the time my reasoning was it was too far to travel, I needed a break, and I didn’t want the…
