Meet Lucy, A Very Special Dog Indeed

Today is National Love Your Pet Day, and it’s the perfect time to introduce you to my latest senior rescue dog, Lucy Mittens Sutton! If you remember, In my last post, I was trying to decide if Rosie needed another friend for comfort. When I saw this little dog on the Muttville website, I knew she was the one for us. My husband encouraged me to adopt her, and in early November, she became the newest addition to our family. She is our 4th senior rescue from Muttville. Mittens is the name Muttville gave her, so I’ve kept it as her middle name, but Lucy fits her better!

Lucy arrived with tail wags galore and the sweetest personality that matched her sweet face. She wanted to play with Rosie right away, and she wasn’t bothered by our two cats. She brought a much-needed sense of joy to our family. My husband was bedridden at the time from the end stages of Parkinson’s, and he loved having her sit with him and cuddle. She somehow knew exactly what to do.

Lucy and Rosie spent the first few weeks getting to know each other, and Rosie taught her how to bark when the doorbell rang and how to wait by the door for a morning walk. They were both by my side everywhere I went, and when my husband called, they would come running, too. Lucy fit into our family so perfectly. She brought us joy and smiles. (I sometimes wonder if Chelsea may have sent her to us.)

I didn’t realize when we adopted Lucy that I would soon need her comfort as much as Rosie did. My husband entered Hospice in early December, and he passed away at the end of December. Lucy and Rosie have been by my side every day since then, and they never leave me. Lucy cuddles with me at night with Rosie right next to her. They are a ray of hope and healing for me, and in rescuing Lucy, I found not only another loving companion but also a source of strength and comfort for myself.

Each of us will suffer a loss during our lifetime, and having a pet by your side can bring a comforting routine to your days and a soothing balm for your heart. I may have rescued Lucy, but in return, she rescued me. I am grateful for all of my pets, and today, I celebrate each and every one of them!

If you have a pet by your side, give them an extra hug today and a special treat! If you’ve recently lost a special pet, maybe it’s time to rescue another one. The pet you rescue will change your life for the better, and you will change theirs. I’m reminded of this every day when I look at the beautiful gift my friend Deanna sent me for Christmas.

Happy National Love Your Pet Day!

Hugs,

Anne

Oh, Anne. I just left a message on your Facebook page and I thought I’d come over here and see the story about your new sweet Lucy.  I’m sorry to hear about your husband doubly so now that I’ve see that he was suffering from Parkinson’s. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about four years ago. It’s a terrible terrible disease. I’m so sorry he had to suffer from that. I just take one day at a time, I’m doing much better than I know other people are so I can’t complain. You will be in my prayers I know how hard it is to lose someone you love so much. ❤️

Jean, I am so sorry to hear you have Parkinson’s, too. I know people who have that disease, some worse than others. My husband lived with that disease for a while, and the turning point came when he fell and broke his femur. He always refused to use a walker or a cane, and once that fall happened, his body couldn’t recover.

Oh, Anne I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear husband.  And yes, we might recue them and bring them into our homes, but what we get back from them is so much more.
