Merry Merry Snow Days

Merry merry snow days block 2

We’re on Block Two, part two of Merry Merry Snow Days.  If you think this is the longest block ever you might be right!  That’s why I’ve broken it into two parts.

As you look at each block, notice the fussy cutting.  I’m lucky to have my friend Nancy cut and piece all my backgrounds while Kim and I work on the applique.  I can’t encourage you enough to think before you cut!  So much time goes into making an applique quilt, and you want the foundation to look as good as possible.

Today you’re going to thank me for giving these llama’s 1/4″ bias legs.  All you need to do is clip off enough bias for each leg, PLUS a little extra to turn under at the ends and ta da…llama legs!  You can also use your 1/4″ bias for the signpost.  (Note:  I didn’t insert the post into the seam allowance, but there’s no reason you can’t.)

I try my best not to have too many little parts, but llama’s need those tiny ears!  You can do these if you take your time, and bring the seam allowance down to 1/8″.  If you have trouble on your first try, make a new template,  smooth the sides with an emery board, and try again.

The lettering on the sign is embroidered after the applique is complete.  My directions say to stem stitch the lettering, but I think a back-stitch will be easier (this is something I didn’t catch on the final proof).  A back-stitch goes around curves better than a stem stitch.

Perfect Circles

Karen K Buckley makes a product called “Perfect Circles” that will help you create exactly that…perfect circles!  You’ll make the perfect headphones and other circles you’ll find throughout this quilt.  Perfect Circles are plastic templates in assorted sizes and here’s how to use them:

Choose a circle that matches the size you need and trace around the circle on the wrong side of the fabric.

Cut out 1/4″ from the circle, and gather edge using a running stitch.

Pull up gathers and wet edges with starch. Press until dry.

Remove the plastic circle and press again.

A perfect circle every time!

I’d love to hear what applique method is your favorite and I hope you find some time this weekend to stitch away.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Anne

Thanks for “Perfect Circle” tips.  I use Perfect Circles yet skipped the starch step, which I will now try.  Thanks again.
