Behind the quilts

Have you seen these pictures?  Design photos!    When I design a quilt I take photos as I go along.  Photos help me see the blocks in another dimension.  It’s kind of like holding your work up to a mirror and looking at it in reverse.  Try it and you’ll see what I mean.  If something is wrong you should be able to spot it.

Remember Yoyoville?

I filled glass candy jars with my yoyo’s as I went along.  It was fun to do and I fell in love with the look of the jars.  When it came time to put them on the quilt I really had to force myself.  I had everyone making yoyo’s and by the time I finished I could have opened a candy store!  Some of you have made this into a full or queen size quilt (yes I have some basic directions if you email me)!  Think of the jars you would need and what a photo it would make!

As the quilt came together it was more and more exciting to see!

Finally I began construction on the houses!

Oh the joy of design.  It get’s me every time!  Seeing the finished quilt when it came back from my quilter was so much fun!

Here’s a rough sketch from “Postcard Cuties for Winter”.  I pin the sketches to my design wall for an idea of what the completed quilt will look like.   Sometimes I move them around, adjust the sketch, or go back to the drawing board and start over.   Once I’ve decided on the sketch, it’s refined for applique or embroidery.

Hummm, how will this look?  Do they fit in the blocks?  Each block has a number and a place but I write in pencil just in case I move  the blocks around!

Postcard Cuties for Winter finally comes together!

All of my quilts begin right here:  I sit at my desk with graph paper, calculator pencils and erasers.  The quilt is in my head, but I still have to work it out on paper.

“Le Jardin” was one of my favorite quilts to design.  It was a fun challenge to work in just a few colors.  I started once again with the graph paper and pencils.  Can’t forget the erasers as I use them a lot.  As I design a quilt I prepare the applique using the Spray Starch method. This allows me to see the finished blocks before they are actually appliqued in place.   Many changes are made to the blocks as I work.   It’s a process that I love, but it can also be exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

More changes are made as the quilt is finalized.  Here’s the perfect example;  the bunny below is gray but I end up choosing a red fabric for the bunny because the quilt needs more balance, more color in the bottom corner.  The gray bunny is taken off, along with the cream fabric strip (yes, like you I HATE to rip out).  The little red bunny takes her place and I put in a darker fabric strip in place of the cream.

I knew when I looked at the quilt I knew  it was the right decision. It’s a scary thing this world we call color!  But truth be told  I LOVE red bunnies.  Especially when they make themselves at home in French garden quilt!

Le Jardin is finally designed!

The same process goes on in the studio over and over.  Here’s the tree from “The Night Before Christmas”.  Had I told you ahead of time I was making a red Christmas tree, you would have thought I was nuts.  When you look at the overall colors of the finished quilt you can see a green tree just wouldn’t work!

The Night Before Christmas finished quilt…

And now I have this stack of fabric in the studio that’s promising to be another quilt very soon.  Hummmm, wonder what I’m up to?

Next up?

More photos!

Back soon!

Bitsy Says Thank You!

Bitsy says thank you to all of you who may have come to my blog sometime during the past few weeks to see if I’ve posted something new.  Thank you for for being so patient when you saw her photo over and over.  Thank you for understanding how busy her mom is, and how she just nevvvvvver lets her blog go this long unless she’s tethered to the computer.  And well, thank you for looking at Bitsy and not saying “oh it’s still that darn dog”.  If you did she forgives you.  She’s been suffering from attention deprivation too.

Sweet relief is on the way!  This week I can play just a bit and maybe you’ll even hear a few tweets!  I just  finished the last sample for market!  She jumped right off  The Night Before Christmas quilt.

So if you like this quilt…

You just might like my newest pincushion!

Bitty Mouse!

She’s ready to hold your pins, or forget the pincushion base and place her in your Christmas tree.  She’ll be so happy!  Why she could even peek out of a stocking or sit on your mantle.  And best of all?  She’s easy to make!  The pattern will be for sale on my web site Friday!

For all of you who entered my contest oh so long ago, if you guessed the name of my quilt I’ll be picking a winner this week!  Finally!  One of you is going to win a fun prize!  Yeahhhhh!! It’s about time don’t you think?

You’ll also get sneak peeks at new fabric and patterns.  All of this is happening because I’m in such a great mood!  I leave for market a week from Wednesday!

Hugs to each and every one of you!

Anne

What on earth is a critter?

Hummm what kind of critter do you think I might have on my new Christmas quilt?

Could it be a possum with her babies?

Or how about a camel?

Or a tiger might be nice!

Truth is some of you have already guessed it!  You’re so smart and you know who you are!  Here’s a “little” hint just in case you haven’t gotten that email from me yet.  Critter… what do you consider a critter?

Hope you enjoy these wonderful drawings from my Grand-daughter Michaela. She’s an artist in the making!

Back soon,

Anne

Don’t you love weekends?

I love weekends, and I love them even more when I don’t have plans.  I spent Saturday working in the studio and watching my favorite TV shows.  I’m working on my next block of the month and I’ll give you a little hint;  it’s a Christmas quilt.  Ahhh, you may think you have ENOUGH Christmas quilts.  I’m here to say this is not possible and I hope I can entice you into more applique.   There’s another little critter I love to draw almost as much as a bunny.   I’ve kept it a secret for a long time and I hope I see some smiles when you see it!  :>)  I love Christmas and I’ve been wanting to design this quilt for awhile, but I just had to wait for the perfect fabric to come along.  Thanks to Moda Fabrics I found it!

Mooch loves it when I’m drawing.  She  makes herself comfortable right in the middle of my work.  Her favorite thing to do is lay on my drawings batting my pencil and  eraser onto the floor.  Good thing I love that cat.   And to think she’s covered up my drawings for these pictures!  She knows when she has to keep a secret!

As for Bitsy, she might be old but she has the blood work of a young dog.  The vet can’t find anything wrong.  She still won’t walk unless she REALLY wants something, or forgets that she can’t walk.   I’m actually carrying her on walks now, thinking the entire time how silly I am.  Chelsea and I walk while Bitsy is carried.  She does however, occasionally want down to sniff a bush or do her business.   She gets her teeth cleaned on Wednesday and then she just might be in better shape than me!  Don’t you wish you were a Bunny Hill dog?  I guess when you’re 14 1/2 in dog years you can pretty much get anything you want.  She looks at me with those eyes and I melt.

My huband is getting better every day.  His right thumb still hurts at the knuckle.  Seems that was the most painful bite.  He did happen to pick up a pair of leather gloves to keep in the garage just in case. What can I say?  At least he has gloves now.

As for the rescue kitty, I’m sorry to say it had to be put to sleep.  It’s back legs were severely infected and they think it had been run over by a car.  It was really in bad shape but at least it’s suffering has ended.  It didn’t have rabies.  Say a little prayer that it knows it was loved at the end.

Hope you are all having  a great weekend.  I forgot I have to get that darn laundry done today.  I hate doing laundry and I hate folding clothes.  If you have a way of getting out of doing laundry tell me now before I start!

Hugs,

Anne
