Bitsy Button Sutton

My Bisty

I knew the day would come when we had to say goodbye to our sweet Bitsy.  But time caught all of us by surprise this week, as she went into severe kidney failure.  We couldn’t turn it around.  We said goodbye to her yesterday, and she died in my arms.  I would have gone with her if I could have.

She was our companion, a best friend and she gave us unconditional love.  I feel so empty now that she is gone, like my heart has been hollowed.  I see her everywhere.

Chelsea and Mooch were her friends and I know the house must feel empty for them too.   When we came home without her, Chelsea walked all around the outside of the car sniffing.

Bitsy was a gift to us from heaven, and I’m so grateful for the time we had with her.  She taught us so much.  You can read about her here.

I hope the tears will stop in a few days, and my heart will fill with memories of her. For those of you who have been through the death of a pet, I know you understand the feeling.

Bitsy has her wings now and I hope she’s learning to use them well.  I will miss her so much.

Hugs to each of you who have ever lost a pet.

My husband loved the story too! Anyone who has ever had a Beloved Pet has to go through this at some point, but it sure doesn’t make it easy. Take time to grieve. • Lori Remington - Good Morning
I’m writing this with a very, very heavy heart wishing I could reach out and just give you a big hug! I have lost several pets over my lifetime, but none as heartbreaking as our first dog together as a couple. She was my wedding gift from my husband, over 30 years ago. She was an english springer spaniel, and he didn’t want me home alone at night, as hewas a new CHP officer and worked lots of nights. She was at our wedding with us, on our honeymoon with us, shared the birth of our daughter with us ( and her first litter, at the same time). The other great pet loss was when we lost her granddaughter. We always have kept one pup from each generation of her….we have her great-granddaughter now. She is such a joy! My next huge pet loss will come when I lose the cat I have now. I have shed many, many tears and joys with her, she definitely has an unconditional bond with me,and I love her so! I’m tearing up just writing this to you. I live very close by to you, and never met you, but feel a kindred spirit with you. I live in Stockton. My husband and I are now retired, but your spouse may have met mine over the years, as my husband worked in the Tracy office for years, and if I recall your writings correctly, yours was with a fire dept. I hope to meet you someday, and then I will willingly give you the needed hug you need today.ReplyCancel

  • Dawn - I’m so sorry to hear of your loss Anne. Parting from a much loved friend is harder than words can say.

I was lost and the only thing that got me through was a book i got from amazon “the rainbow bridge: a pet loss is heavens gain”. It made me feel better and i know i will see my sweet simba again as you will see Bitsy. A few months later i had to get another dog to fill that emptyness. I will be thinking and praying for you as you go through the next few weeks.ReplyCancel

  • Patty - Anne,

I am so sorry for the loss of your precious Bitsy. We had to put our beloved Bruno down on May 6 (very unexpectedly) and it was devastating for my husband and I (we don’t have any children). Our remaining pup has been dealing with grief since then, some days eating , some days not, wandering, pacing, panting. My husband and I both lost weight from not eating and not sleeping. That feeling in your stomach, the lump in your throat and the hole in your heart are so real and devastating.

Time will help to soothe the loss and help you to rejoice in the wonderful memories of your faithful and loving companion.

In the interim, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this very difficult time.ReplyCancel

  • Lynda - Oh Anne, I can’t tell you how sorry I am. I had a feeling when I saw the title that it was going to be sad news. As someone who’s lived with pets for most of my 63 years, I understand the heartbreak that comes with a beloved pet’s death.

Please accept my most sincere condolences, and my wish that Bitsy’s memory will be a blessing for you and your husband.ReplyCancel

  • Jenny - Oh I feel for you they become members of the family not pets and its just as distressing to lose them.ReplyCancel

  • Megan - Dear Anne, So very sorry to hear about the loss of Bitsy. I can imagine how you feel. It is just such a loss, and so sad for Chelsea and Mooch. We lost our German Shepherd at 15 years and some months, she’d had a hard life before we got her… my cattle dog had never been alone before she’d had her ‘Mum’ with her all her life, she died a couple of years later at 17 and a bit. I would rush to the house after an evening shift expecting her to be there… this went on for months. I saw her in the garden for many months after she’d died. It was especially hard as both our girls had to be put to sleep and the guilt was hard to take, there was little alternative really. You will have fond memories and many more tears. I feel for you so much. It’s been many years but I still can’t think of another dog, just want mine back. Remember she was blessed with you too, you made her life so happy, and she yours. Take care.ReplyCancel

  • Polly Hada - Dear Anne,
We had to put down our precious Boston Terrier, Tabi, and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. She was ours for 15 wonderful years. According to the vet, it would have been making her suffer to ignore the obvious. I can truly empathize. It was like losing our 5th child. Unfortunately, the only thing that helps is TIME. It takes the passing of time to help the empty hole in your heart to mend a bit. But there will always be a hole there for your beautiful Bitsy. I believe you will see her and be with her again. God Bless.ReplyCancel

  • gloria g. - yes…..I feel your pain. On Thursday we lost our dear Dotte Girl Green Walls. She came to us through our vet, she had been hit by a car. The folks didn’t want her back. I thought she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen…..she came to share her life with us. She made it to 15 in April of this year. She had diabetes insipidus if I spelled that right. I have been lost these two days. Our home is quiet, even with four other dogs and six kitties. Dotte was so very bonded to me. I too held her through the Rainbow Bridge. She has her wings……

When I saw your little girls picture, I almost lost my breath. I knew too you were going through the same feeling as we are. My hubby says to remember all those good times we did share, the trips we took, and all those cookies we shared. I remember that last kiss……those eyes looking up at me. Oh how I miss my girl……..

My heart is broken, I will be thinking of you too and praying for you. We will never forget, not one day, not one week, not one moment. The pain is so great, I just hope I can get through this…….

Thank you for sharing…….I feel for you…….

  • usairdoll - I’m sorry to hear of your loss. Over the years our family has lost several pets, Milo our cat of almost 17 years just passed away a few months ago. • Melody - Dearest Anne, I’m shedding a tear too, for darling Bitsy Button. All my dogs have been strays and each with their own stories. I believe each little lost dog knows she is being given a second chance and their love is extra special. Bitsy really was a little angel, you could see it in her eyes. I know there is a dog heaven and she will be there. When my darling Toby was dying I looked out the window and there on the top law was Possum ( my much loved dog who died four years earlier and Toby’s best friend) she had come back to wait for Toby and take him to dog heaven. I know this seems fanciful but it was so real and I believe it really happened. I’m praying Possum and Toby will have come for Bitsy too. Much love and comforting hugs to you, I’m sure all your animal loving friends are sending you big hugs too.ReplyCancel

  • SuzK - I’m so sad to hear about Bitsy. You’ve shared so many sweet stories about her that I feel I knew her personally. Three years ago our older cat had to be put to sleep because she had developed lung cancer. I had originally brought her home to be a companion for my son so the house wouldn’t be empty when he came home from school while I was at work. I always thought of Jacki as his cat and I was just babysitting while he was in college and then when he couldn’t have her in his new apartment. When she died I thought my heart had broken in two. It was overwhelming because, while I cared about her, I had no idea how attached I was to her. My thoughts go out to you and your husband and to Chelsea and Mooch.ReplyCancel

  • Beth - Dear Anne,

My heart goes out to you and your husband as you grieve the loss of your sweet Bitsy. I think all of us who love our pets and have them as members of our families can understand your loss. She was a lucky pup who was so fortunate to land in your loving home and she repaid you with all of the love she could give. I know your heart hurts right now. I couldn’t help but think that I’m glad you were home and not in Germany or Portland so that she could be with you at the end. I wish all animals could be as loved as she is. We have three elder cats in their senior years who are all starting to get health problems. I dread the day when we have to say goodbye. Sending prayers your way for healing hearts and extra snuggles from Chelsea, Mooch, and the other kitties.ReplyCancel

  • Alice Garcia - ” The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master.” (
I always think of this line from the poem when I lose a furry loved one. Bought a little tin heart that had it painted on that I hung on the tree under which I buried my beloved dog of 16 years. Actually discovered it was part of the poem later. They leave this earth but are in your heart forever. XOXOReplyCancel

  • Rosebud - What an amazing little dog. It’s easy to understand why she captured your heart. Just looking at her makes that possible. So sweet. Thank you for sharing. I know she will be at the Rainbow Bridge to greet you someday. All of our dear pets will.ReplyCancel

  • Kim D. - Hi Anne, I’m so sorry for the loss of your beloved Bitsy. Our pets become part of the family and stay in our hearts forever. I have enjoyed coming over to your blog for the past several years to read about your sweet dogs and cat and see their adorable photo’s. I recently lost my beloved Maltese dog Murphy in March and I know it hurts so deeply. The loss even effects the other pets in the household , as my other little maltese was depressed for a couple of months, he just wasn’t his usual happy self. Hugs to you and your family during this difficult time.ReplyCancel

I know what you are going through, these precious animals we are intrusted to care for, end up giving us more joy and happiness than we could ever imagine. Someone once told me that I talk about my animals as if they were my children, well guess what they are.

I share in your grief for Bitsy, but those memories you have with her will last forever!ReplyCancel

  • Beverly - I’m so sorry for your loss of sweet Bitsy. I know how hard it is. I rescued a sweet dog who ended up having a liver shunt. Callie was a young dog when I got her, probably 2 they told me. She lived 7 years with me and she is one dog that got into my heart and is still there to this day. The journey, after loss, is a hard one. My heart hurts for you. I know who much you miss her. I’ll tell Callie to look out for her. I’m sure I know where they both are.ReplyCancel

  • rc - Aw, Bitsy. :( I’m so sorry for your loss. We went through a period where we lost 4 pets in 18 months. It was a bad time in our house. Just as we recovered from one, we would lose another. That’s the problem with having pets all around the same age. : ( I’m thinking about you and your family, including Chelsea and Mooch. Hugs to you all.ReplyCancel

  • Sarah - I’m sorry to hear of your loss. You talk about two of my favorite things: dogs and quilting. I do know the empty feeling and it will ease with time. Sending hugs your way.ReplyCancel

  • Kathleen OGrady - I am so very sorry to hear about your little dog. My heart breaks for you. It was obvious the love you had for Bitsy. I love my dog more than most do I think and can’t imagine that horrible day when she has to go away. Your little dog had a wonderful, loving, happy home and is now free of any pain or sadness, just chewing on stuffed toys and prancing around eating whatever is desired. I hope your heart will heal fast and you remember all the happy funny things your little Bitsy did to make you smile.ReplyCancel

  • Bari Jo - Oh Anne, I’m so sorry – there just aren’t words. We have gone through this with our first dog, too, and they are such a huge part of the family. My heart aches for you and I wish I could give you a hug right now. Take it easy, rest, cry and grieve. I’m so sorry.ReplyCancel

  • Beth - Just had to say that my heart goes out to you. Your story sounds similar to our 17 yr old cat that we lost this spring. I never knew that I would be that devastated when I would have to let him go. Just focus on what a wonderful life you have given that cutie.

Our cat came to us as a kitten that was put in a burlap bag and thrown out on a road. Even though he had a rough start, he fell into a wonderful situation…..ours. He was such a part our family and my companion……even in the sewing room. I’m sure that your friend also had a wonderful life and so lucky to have found your family. To help ease my pain, I’m planning a pictorial quilt featuring him. Yes, I guess that I am one of those crazy pet people. (((hugs))) to you.ReplyCancel

  • Renee - Dear Anne,
I am so sorry to hear about your darling pup, Bitsy. I so loved reading about her these past years. I lost both my dogs within a year of each other and still have a hole in my heart. Sending hugs and love to you and prayers for healing.ReplyCancel

  • Beth in AZ - Oh Anne! I’m so sorry about Bitsy. I am right beside you, as sadly, I had to have my Rally put down about 2 weeks ago from kidney failure too. He was a rescue. The scruffiest, smartest dog I have ever been priveledged to be owned by. He could tell the difference between the flickering of the TV and the flicker of lightning, wanted to PLAY with those animals on TV (!) and could open the bedroom doors to get the prime spot on our beds. His brothers are not quite as peppy with out him to stir them up. {{{hugs to you }}}ReplyCancel

  • SuzieLou - Very sorry for your lost Anne! But I am happy to tell you that your Bitsy will meet my Loulou, my bichon frisé who died a month ago. I see them side by side frolicking in doggy Paradise… Dog love is like no other.ReplyCancel

  • Pamela Blasy - I am so sorry. When we lost Lizzie 3 years ago-I kept hearing her around the house for weeks. A good friend told me that her spirit would be there for me as long as I needed her. Took a few months til I let her go but still get sad when I think of losing her. I still have her sister and just dread the thought-they become part of us. I never thought I would have a chihauhau but don’t know what I was thinking. Please take comfort in knowing we all care!!ReplyCancel

  • Wendy - Oh Anne my heart just broke when I read about Bitsy. No doubt about it – she was a very special friend- it was evident by just looking at her in your pictures. My thoughts are with you and your family and all the four legged ones who also love Bitsy Button.ReplyCancel

  • Jan& Brian - Hi Anne. We are thinking of you and Bitsy today. So sad to hear this news. She looked like she was the best of friends to you. When Lily (our little mini-dachshund died at just 3 years old) we knew and still know that she’s with us everyday because the paw print she left on our hearts was so memorable. Bitsy will be with you wherever you go.

Lots of love and many hugs to you! J&BReplyCancel

  • Renita Sullivan - Dear Anne,
Just getting back home from a month away with no internet contact and saw your post about sweet Bitsy. i am so very sorry and totally understand your pain. Our Maggie, who I have written about to you in the past, was 14 and 1/2 when she passed away a week before we left. It was also sudden, her heart we think, and we were not ready. It sounds silly to some, given that she was a big dog and she was old, but I do not think that you are ever ready and the longer we love, the harder it is. She died with her head on my lap in the middle of the night early on mother’s day. I have cried and cried and cried some more as I know you will. All I can say is that we were both privileged to have those wonderful souls in our lives and we are better and richer people because of it. I will be thinking of you and hoping that you are comforted by your happy memories of her and that you find your way to laughter as well as the tears. Both are necessary…Hugs, RenitaReplyCancel
