In all the craziness around here getting ready for market Chelsea and I still manage to take our morning walk. She loves it, I love it and today a little mother duck loved it!
We live near a “wetland” area and Chelsea and I walk by it almost every day. Today I noticed a duck in the street pacing back and forth by one of the street drains. As I got closer I could hear her babies crying quacking and I realized they had fallen into the drain and the poor little mom was so stressed!
I called my husband and the fire department. I knew one of them would come to the rescue and they both did!
Here’s my husband and a fireman looking for the babies…
The fire department put their ladder down in the drainage hole…
…and then decided what to do…
One of the firemen went down into the drain and they handed him a canvas bag…
…to scoop up the babies!
There’s nothing better than a fireman and a bag filled with baby ducks…
He carried them over to where mom was anxiously waiting…
…the babies were released and mom and babies waddled off into the field. Look at the center top of the picture below and you’ll see the mother. The babies are right behind but the tall grass is hiding them.
I think this just might be the best mother’s day present I’ve ever seen!
Happy babies + happy mother = Happy Mother’s Day!
For me it’s back to writing patterns. I’ll have something to show you soon I hope. We leave on Tuesday for Kansas City!
Hugs,
Anne
Thanks so much for sharing – I love a great story with a happy ending! And who doesn’t love baby-ducks – a whole bag full nevertheless! :-) Quack-quack!
Qh Anne, what a wonderful mother’s day story!! Don’t you just love it when men in uniform come to the rescue!! And everyone lived happily ever after!
P
A story with a happy ending, wow, that made your (and my) day!
OK, so now I have tears in my eyes! What a sweet story…thanks for the photos! Mother’s Day isn’t just for humans!
Love it! What a blessing that YOU & your furbaby walked by duck-mommy and understood her body language. Thank you for your wonderful sharing :)
thanks for the sweet story about mama & baby ducks. That kind of story should be on every newscast we watch or hear, instead of all the political blah blah blah. Your pictures made the story come alive.
What a cute mother’s day story! Hildy
ALL of her babies fell in? POOR THING! :( I’ve seen a mother duck in distress before when her babies are in danger. This mama was soooooo lucky that you and Chelsea (and your hubby and fire dept) came to her rescue! :) That wouldn’t have happened in my city.
That story just makes my day! I love the bag of babies! So precious!!!!
Thank you so much. I so enjoyed your Mother’s Day story. Have a wonderful day.
Anne — I agree — made my day too !
Happy Mothers’ Day — thanks for sharing.
Karen
LOL! WAY too cute! I hope you told Nireko about this … you know … on account of the mother duck / baby duck thing you two have going … ;) hugs
I love a happy ending! Happy Mother’s Day to you! Hope you have a great Market.
Awwwwwwwww how scared that poor Momma must’ve been. Awesome firefighters you have there to take their time to rescue all those babies. Great job to them all! They’re just too cute. We were driving Friday after my Ortho surgeons surgery follow-up appt. near WalMart and traffic came to a dead stop. I could not understand why but then we saw the reason …….actually a number of reasons. Two Geese were out taking a very large number of their babies for a walk across this busy road. They were chunky little babies and all fluffy waddling along.
What a great story for Mothers Day!!
That is a wonderful story! So fortunate you were in the right place at the right time to hear the little ducks. They are adorable.
Yay!!! Happy Mother’s Day to all. ;p
I L-O-V-E happy endings!
Thanks for sharing, Anne. You’ve made my day!
That is the best story and I love the pics – thank you for sharing it. No matter what species you are, if your a mom, you always are concerned about your babies and sometimes you need a hand, thank goodness for your hubby and the firemen. Happy Mothers Day!!
I am so glad you helped save those babies! Yesterday my husband and I saw a dead duck on the highway. We rescued her 7 babies and took them to a bird rehabilitation.
Aww, shucks, you made me cry. Your story and the pictures are the perfect way to start off Mother’s Day! You’ve earned an extra halo today!

Make Way for Ducklings!! What a darling photo of a tote full of baby ducks!!! Not only did your adventures make that Mama Ducks Mothers Day wonderful but mine too with such a heartwarming story! I will be looking for some duckling inspired patterns from you somewhere down the road! This morning My walk with Cindybear involved two cottontale bunnies and a squirrel whose peaceful morning was discombobulated by an airedale pup! Thank you for taking the time to help those ducklings. How wonderful the firemen took the time to rescue them! What will you encounter tomorrow???!! Happy Mothers Day!
Oh my gosh Anne! One of my readers told me I would love this post and yes indeed I do! I have been feeding the peeps in my yard. Soooooooooooo fabulous! One day I hope to meet you in person at quilt market. We have so very much in common.
Hugs and happy Mother’s Day.
Michelle and the Bunnies
Its the season! Our security and fire dept at work blocked the access road into the plant yesterday and a fireman escorted a Mother and 6 babies across the road and into the bushes on the other side. I called their manager to say thanks! And your guys sure went the extra mile!
By far the best Mother’s Day story I’ve heard :)
What a lovely story. I wonder if we will see a new Bunny Hill quilt featuring sweet little ducks. Hope so.
Feliz desenlace para un feliz dia.
Un abrazo

I agree with Nancy C. From Utah – I see the beginnings for the sweetest quilt from Bunny Hill! (I guess it’s true – inspiration can come from anywhere!)
Happy MOther’s Day to you, Anne!!!
A very heart-warming tale, indeed! I agree with Nancy C.! A duckling quilt would be a great way to immortalize this story.:)
