Dresden Progress
This week has been crazy. Too much to do and not enough time. I’m working on a new fabric line and it’s taking longer than expected. A deadline is looming and I’m crossing my fingers I get it off to Moda soon. I’ll be so happy!
In the meantime everyone at Bunny Hill has been working on my Scrappy Plate quilt, helping to get it ready for the quilter. I can just hear you saying…hey that’s not fair…she has help! Let’s just say it’s a good thing. Machine applique has become my best friend and almost all of the plates have been appliqued by machine!
If you follow my method I think you’ll love machine applique. Go ahead, enlarge this photo so you can see.
…and this one showing you how to stop at a point right next to the fabric, lift the presser foot and turn.
Here’s something you may not know…there’s a machine applique tutorial on my blog! That’s right, it’s just waiting for you to try it.
Click here or scroll to the top of the page, click on the Tutorial link and the applique picture. You just might get your blocks done this weekend. Oh, and I forgot to tell you, I’ve decided to add a scallop to the border. Don’t worry, I’ll give you the scallop pattern so you can have one too.
Because of all the assorted colors in my blocks I used a neutral Kimono Silk thread to applique these Dresden. Silk thread on the top and cotton in the bobbin made switching from blade color to blade color much easier. Normally I recommend DMC Machine Embroidery thread for machine applique.
Now think about this…after the girls sew on my Dresden’s they go home and sew on their own! Everyone at Bunny Hill has gone a little Dresden crazy. Just look at a few of their blocks!
Nancy is making her’s out of pink 30’s fabrics. She’s making a quilt for a baby girl!
And my assistant Kim is making her blocks out of assorted Riley Blake fabrics she picked up at market. Just look at these! She says she has more colors coming and I can’t wait to see the rest of the blocks!

your Dresden ‘s are beautiful! I love that they are smaller than most, or they look small next to your needle? I have only made the really big ones so this looks sweet. I must click on the tutorial.

Oh these Dresden plate quilt blocks are just to adorable! Can you even imagine how wonderful they will be when they are done! It is so much fun to see what everyone has chosen – so pretty and so much creativity out there.

Anne, I’m liking what I see with your scrappy dreseden quilt. Makes me think Spring is just around the corner. Can’t wait to see the scalloped borders on the completed quilt.

Hi Anne…..your Dresden plate quilt is adorable. I’ve not started mine yet….but I have gathered fabrics 3 different times…..first it was floral pastels…..then it was a red and white collection of fabrics and I changed my mind again and have now collected limes and blues. I thought about doing it in 30’s too but changed my mind before I collected the fabrics. To night I’m going to cut the 4″ strips for the Dresden plates and then there will be no changing my mind again…but first I want to put the borders on a UFO….your Cinnamon and Cocoa table runner from a few years ago…lately I’m just going in circles and I wish I could stop as it is hard to be productive when you are getting dizzy. Hope you are having a productive weekend!! (o:

yep, we’ve gone dresden plate crazy here! but it’s been a fun crazy for me. i don’t have fabric to design on a strict deadline. scalloped borders??!! that’s something i would LOVE to learn how to do. can’t wait. enjoy the beautiful weather…

I am fairly new to your blog but am so amazed at your talent. Your dresden plate quilt makes me want to drop everything else (which is quite a few projects!!) and focus on making these little darling blocks. I absolutely adore the colours you have chosen and can’t wait to see the whole quilt!!

Anne, I’m so glad you started this Dresden group, it is such fun and so inspiring! It’s amazing to see all the different interpretations of these pretty plates. I machine appliqued by plates for my first Dresden quilt but am doing my Scrappy Plates by hand. I have to admit I’ve been contemplating doing my Le Jardin quilt by machine, just so I can actually get it done. I have all nine block kits still in the packages! I guess if you can machine applique your Dresdens, I can use my machine for Le Jardin….just this once…..right?

Your dotty Dresdens are so cute but I just love all the ones you showed us! I’ve only made one block so far (because I’ve been working hard on another project) but I’m so keen to make more Dresdens now! And especially since you’ve given us “permission” to machine appliqué them ;-) No more anguish over hand-appliqué! Plus, I received a bundle of new fabric in my chosen colours – yellow and grey – this week. Oh, I think tomorrow might be a Dresden day…
