First week of December!
I started December off at our local hospital early on the morning of December 1st. My husband had arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder because of a torn rotator cuff. We had to arrive by 5:45AM.
I had envisioned just “us” arriving at that time of the morning, but to my surprise there was a waiting room filled with patients all scheduled for different surgeries. He was assigned a number and from that point on he could be tracked on the surgery tracker board in the waiting room. It’s an amazing, color coded, automated system that lets you see where the patient is at all times…in the preop room, in surgery, in recovery, etc. His surgery went well, and he was home by early afternoon, rotator cuff repaired, arm in a sling, ice machine and pain meds in hand. The surgery tracker even tells you when the patient has left the hospital van you believe it? I hope it didn’t say that we stopped at In and Out Burger on the way home. Starving husbands are not happy ones.
In case you didn’t know my husband does all the shipping for Bunny Hill. He’s right-handed and the surgery was on his right shoulder. I’ve been prepared for the worst but it’s only been 3 days and the man is already getting back to work. He can type left-handed! Everyone else is jumping in to help so we haven’t even noticed any glitches in our system (knock on wood). And while he’s been recovering I’ve been busy sewing together “Redwork Raining Cats & Dogs” my newest redwork quilt.
I’m using Moda’s new redwork line, Redwork Renaissance; polka dots, cherries, stripes and floral fabrics make this quilt so much fun to make! Here’s a few little sneak peaks…
We’ve used the new Pilot FriXion erasable gel pens to transfer the drawings onto the background fabric. If you haven’t tried these pens I think you’ll love them. They draw easily on fabric and the ink disappears when you apply heat with a iron. You can find these pens at office supply stores or here on my website. I’ve heard that if you expose the embroidery to below freezing temperatures the ink lines will return but I don’t plan on putting mine in the freezer anytime soon.

I also enjoy redwork and think the Raining quilt is gorgeous and look forward to someday being able to do that one. I like anything that is done in red and white. Anne, I’m glad to hear your husband’s surgery went so well and that he’s so quickly on the mend. I love your “Raining…” pattern in redwork, and it just couldn’t be sweeter using Moda’s new line. What gorgeous fabrics!! And as always, your designs are utterly charming. That’s terrific your sweetie is healing, and the hospital tracking system is really something. What I’d like to know is, can it be applied to husbands who aren’t having surgery – you know, when they’re in hardware stores, grocery stores, that kind of thing… :)

I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your redwork. It’s always stunning. I have set of those pens, I’m hoping to get to use them after finals in two weeks. My husband is involved in a lengthy process for his health and your patterns help me pass the time watching him rest between treatments. The quilt blocks are so portable–I cut the pieces for each block and place in a small box to add to my sewing bag. Then, I stitch away. I’m working on Snowbound BOM.
Love the red colors and designs in the fabric you chose.

As for your redwork – it is too wonderful!! Red is my absolute favorite color, so I am immediately drawn to this and to that gorgeous fabric. Please don’t keep us in suspense too long – I reallly, really WANT this!!

I’m glad hubs is doing fine. It sounds like he was at the same “type” of facility that my mom had her recent surgery at. Love the color coded board. Very efficient and the staff where we were at are wonderful.

Hi Anne! I so glad to hear your husband is doing so well. We have the surgical patient tracking system in our hospital waiting rooms also. My hubby has been very grateful for it during the two surgeries I had earlier this year. It is indeed amazing. The other amazing thing is just as you said, you arrive so early in the morning to a completely full waiting room…we tend to forget that lots of other surgeries are going on besides ours, LOL. Your Redwork Raining Cats and Dogs is so gorgeous. I love applique but it is not very easy for me to cut small pieces with scissors…so when I see a quilt I love done in stitchery, I turning cartwheels!!! Well, in my heart I am, LOL. The spirit is willing and all that, *wink*. Thanks for sharing the peeks with us. I will be keeping your hubby in my thoughts and prayers for continued speedy recovery. Big Hugs…

My DH had shoulder surgery in August, so I know what you are going through. The ice therapy machine is fabulous! Our niece loaned hers to us and it has made a huge difference for him. He’s up to 3 pounds on his right arm now — he had a torn muscle and crushed collar bone, so a bit different surgery from your DH.

Just beautiful work! I am definitely (almost) ready to try some redwork – but I HAVE A QUESTION!!! How in the world do you tie-off so that you don’t see knots and/or ends? Your work looks pristine – and my previous attempts have left me very unsatisfied because I can’t seem to hide my knots and ends on the back! Any advice?
