I’m in love with Jelly Rolls. There’s just something so dang sweet about them! Yesterday I went to the Moda web site and ta da! My favorite Jelly Rolls appeared! I was so surprised to see that Lily & Will were having coffee hot chocolate with Moda!
If you like to play with Jelly Rolls go to the Moda website for the new Jelly Roll Dream Challenge! Here’s your chance to design a Jelly Roll quilt and win big! Enter the contest and you might win a Janome sewing machine not to mention a lot of fame. It’s “sew” easy and so much fun! Remember you can download the fabric swatches for all the current lines on the Moda website then design away using graph paper or Electric Quilt.
I’m taking a little survey: Are you a “waste not, want not kind of quilter” or is “time well spent” more important to you? I have to admit I’m on the side of “time”. I’m the one who loves to use pre-cut cream and white jelly rolls! Forget cutting my own strips it’s just not for me. I want to open the package and start sewing. Which one are you? Tell me in the comments and you could win a cream jelly roll along with a Lily & Will Jelly Roll! I’ll tell you the winners on my next blog post! (There is no wrong or right answer so be honest.)
Back soon!
Anne
I am on the schizophrenic side. My time is the most important until I start cutting or sewing, then I look at the waste and think, oh my goodness, waste not, want not. I do have more fabric than I will use in this lifetime. So I cut the remainder into strips and squares and accumulate those until I realize it is taking too much time. And the cycle starts again. Schizophrenic!!!!
Precuts are great for time saving and accurate piecing for beginners like me! And jelly rolls are so sweet! Never bought 1 before, and would like to start my very first one with my favourite Lily and Will!
i would love to open a package of jelly rolls and sit right down to sew. however, too often, the strips aren’t cut exactly 2 1/2″ and can throw my blocks off. sometimes a quilt shop employee will cut them, or people in other countries — not everybody cuts the same, and it’s frustrating to find that out when you’re trying to match up seams. I prefer to cut my own — i could really use an accucut, baby! waste not, want not — and i love scrappy quilts!
No question……………I’m all about time! Bring on the pre-cuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anne, I love jelly rolls and have made several quilts from them. However, I have always been a waste not want not kinda girl. I save all the little bits and even use the tiny ones for pet bed stuffing. Thank you for all the work you do and sharing it with us. Take care and God bless, Cory
I love using precuts – I like the variety of fabrics without having to buy bigger pieces and cut them into strips.
I love jellyrolls, because I don’t have to think about how to cut so many different fabrics and jelly rolls are the most lovely combination. Just watching at (unopened) jellyrolls make me feel so happy. The pink one of Lily & Will is still at my most wanted list ;-)
what fun using precuts the best fabric and the best cut
I am a quilter with a scrap bin filled but always looking for
the better precut.
I have never used a jelly roll, but am a strip cutter. I have drooled, however! They do look marvelously fun and easy to work with- not to mention the ease of having all the fabrics coordinated for you!
Thanks for the shot!
Precuts so easy and fun. Really save time too. Linda
I love, love, love jelly rolls! It’s so nice to be able to start sewing as soon as you get your fabric.
I love the idea of using precuts, saves time and my hands.
I usually buy yardage, but have gotten some precuts that will be fun to use.
Debbie
Anne,
I love jelly rolls! Pre cuts are oh so accurate! Stitch together beautifully! Saves so much time, and the jelly rolls give you just a taste of EVERY fabric in the entire line!
Your newsletters are oh so sweet too! Thanks so much!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE jelly rolls, charm packs and the like… but they just seem TOO pretty to use! ;-) I always end up pulling fat quarters or yardage from my stash, and put off using those gorgeous rolls and packs for some other future project– always waiting for *just the PERFECT thing*. I think I just really like looking at all those lucious fabrics so carefully coordinated and packaged– they’re a masterpiece on their own! (by the way, I also have a thing about hating to use that last little scrap of a favorite fabric– even though it may be going into a beautiful quilt, I still just hate to see the end of it.)
I love the time-saving part, but those pre-cuts are also just so super cute! I would love to try the creamy jelly roll – am really loving solids, even though I went through a phase where I wouldn’t even consider using them in my projects.
I love to use pre-cuts for the variety they offer. I prefer to cut my own strip sets with my own choice of fabrics. Love your color choices for the new fabric line!
Anne,
I think I fall somewhere in between the two. I like the time saved aspect of pre-cuts and have enjoyed using a few of them. On the other hand, the stash is filled with fabrics that caught my eye for one reason or another and I like to add them into projects that may also have used pre-cuts. I don’t save my scraps for my use, I keep a bag that I fill with scraps and then pass along to my mother and my aunt, who have enjoyed making many scrap quilt projects together. Thanks for all the great ideas!
Sarah
Hi Anne!
I want to thank you for the heads up on the Moda Jelly Dream Design. I had decided to sit down and finally come up with something easy to do with jelly rolls with the idea in mind to send it out to Moda some day. I am some one who has not ever use a jelly roll or any precut fabric at all but would love to try! I also think that with Lily & Will II would also look great for the pattern you designed in 2008 Little Jelly Bags. That is the pattern that got me more curious about what Bunny Hill has to offer.
Sincerely,
Jennifer O.
I love to use both. I don’t think that I have made anything totally from pre-cuts……seems that I need a little something else added in♥
I have good intentions of saving money and cutting my own strips but then I see those jelly rolls and how perfectly cut and rolled they are. Maybe I’ll get thrifty somewhere else. Not with my sewing projects (as my credit card statement will attest). Love all your designs, too.
I just bought some lilly & will charms and can’t wait to use them! This is my first time using precuts!
I love pre-cuts! I’m rather new to quilting and slow at rotary cutting, so pre-cuts save me alot time. Plus, I don’t have many quilter’s cottons yet so this way, I get to enjoy using bits of an entire line. Knowing they all go together too, helps speed things up for me. I’m not continually trying to decide if fabrics work well together.
I guess I have been a fraidy cat to buy jelly rolls, thinking what am I going to do with them. However, recently I am making two of the baby quilts from the Bunny Hill designs and I am thinking…”wow, wouldn’t a jelly roll be a whole lot easier!”…so I am going to try them. It is just to get out of the old mind set of always buying fabric off the bolt, and I am a cheapskate, thinking I am limited with this fabric, since it is only 2 1/2 inches wide. But honestly…I am going to change with the times.
I guess I am a waste not want not kind of gal. There is a down side to this in that I end up with toom many scrapes. I need to clear out from time to time. I have come to like to use charm squares and jelly rolls. Actually the elimimate waste.
I go back and forth. Sometimes I just need to sit down and quilt like RIGHT NOW!!!! Menopause does that to ya. But I have collected some beautiful creams and whites over the years I want to use up. I also prefer to use cotton sateen as a solid and they don’t offer that in precuts yet.
I’m definitely a “waste not, want not” kind of girl…and my sewing room shows it!! LOL!!
Hi Anne! Can you believe I have not made anything with a jelly roll…yet….the pinked edges kind of intimidate me a bit… I have purchased a few… and they are sitting there looking so cute… I have a few patterns and am hoping to get started and make a few quilts with them this year! I like the cutting process but if I am successful trying my jelly rolls… I can see me using them to save time! Thanks for the great giveaways! Bari
I love using precuts to speed up the quilt making process! I’ve not bought a plain jelly roll yet but I need one for a quilt along I want to do. Maybe I’ll win one instead! Thanks for the chance! :0)
I am with you on the ‘time’ factor. I want to just get going. PLUS, I love having a bit of each of the line available. I can never decide on just one or two yards of a collection. :)
I definitely don’t like wasting fabric or anything for that matter, nothing goes to waste around here. I have to say also that I’m all for saving time too, so I like pre-cut fabrics as long as they are accurate. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences with a pre-cut quilt kit, and with a charm pack that was not quiet 5″ sq. So I’d cut if I need accurate pieces and use pre-cuts for more forgiving projects, like scrappy quilts. Blessings.
Hi Anne! I’m not a big fan of cutting, but since I’m on “no buy” with 2 weddings in the next year (the nerve of those kids!), I might have to do more…but then again, I like to LOOK at my jelly rolls and hate to cut into them! I’m sure I’d break open Lily and Will to fondle and use though..
I forgot to say…. I also don’t know what to do with the left overs from precuts. I can’t add them to my scrap bins since all that fabric is washed. I’m a scrap-keeper so I have a hard time with the waste. :-)
I suspect I’m in the minority but I do not like Jelly Rolls……at all.
First of all they are very messy to work with. All those little pinked points shed all over everything. I also don’t like to work with unwashed fabrics. There are so many chemicals which give off smelly fumes when you iron them. And to make it all work together in a quilt top you can’t wash your yardage either.
I jumped on the Jelly Roll bandwagon a couple of years ago and bought a Swell Jelly Roll and matching yardage. The Jelly Roll fabric was very poor quality, rough and course. Not at all nice fabric for the money! The Swell yardage I bought along with it was much nicer. I put the quilt top together but I don’t know if I’ll finish it since I’m so disappointed with the fabric.
So I’m a bit leery of precuts. I worry about what quality I’m getting and also that it’s difficult to prewash.
I think I am undecided on this one. I have cut my own strips just so I could make a “jelly roll” pattern and didn’t have the right jelly roll on hand to make it. On the other hand, I love the convenience of the strips already cut (accurately!)so I can sew, sew, sew!
Karen in Breezy Point
Cost is usually the dictator for me. I have yet to buy a jelly roll, but think it would be lots of fun to create a project with all the strips cut and all the colors coordinated.
I am okay with a little waste. I just share with my quilt bee friends. Would you believe I have not ever owned a jelly roll? Charms squares and one honey bun but no jelly roll.
Although I do hate cutting strips, I like to have a choice when it comes to the background fabrics. I do love having the assortment of fabrics a jelly roll offers. Quilting has come so far since our grandmothers’ days!! Mary
I would rather sew than cut – so jelly rolls, and other precuts are perfect for me.
Hugs – Marie
I guess I am more in line with the “time well spent”. I would much rather just get stated with the sewing part. I do love the jelly rolls, they make it so easy!!!
I love having enough fabric to fussy cut what I need from a fat quarter. But the time I save from precuts and tha accuracy of the precuts is fantastic. I even washed a charm pack recently and because the edges were pinked it did ont fray. The other thing I love about the precuts is you get one of each fabric in the collection and that makes them such a great product. I have to go with the precuts!
I’m a “waste not, want not” but would love to be a “time well spent”. I use pre-cuts some, but very carefully. If I have to open a jelly roll for a pattern that only calls for less than half of them….I just can’t do. I’ll usually cut my own strips. But if a pattern calls for all the strips to be used…I’m very happy to splurge and open the jelly roll.
Love, love, love the jelly rolls and other precuts. Matter of fact, I have just bought two jelly rolls to make a quilt and I lean towards more precuts lately (never enough time) and when I do go through my scrap drawer I am cutting my scraps into precuts so I can be ready for a scrappy quilt when the time comes.
I like to make it a combo. I’ll buy jelly rolls of my favorite line, but then cut out my basic whites out of a bolt.
Oh, this is such an adorable line of fabric, and I have a new nephew coming in April! So far, I have used charm packs, and have been cutting my scraps into 2 1/2 inch strips…just can’t waste any fabric. But I have been itching to try a jelly roll!
I used to pay no attention to how long something took and just enjoy the process but lately I have had a change of heart and appreciate using some pre cut fabrics. Wouldn’t it be nice to win some cream and white? I definitely think so!!
A waste not want not kind of girl, but I have used jelly rolls and charm packs(bought on sale).
Would love to add cream and white to my stash.
definitely a waste not-want not kinda girl! There’s always a way to use up those scraps!
I admit I have not used precuts in cream or white but think it is a great idea. I have used jelly rolls and charm packs and love the time they save. Bobbie
At this point in my life,If I want more fabric that means less jelly rolls. Wish money was not a factor because they look so yummy all rolled up so sweet. I saw the jelly roll challenge yesterday….I am going to give it a whirl! Then when I win and When I’m famous :) i’ll be able to use all the jelly rolls i want!!!!!! Dream a little dream with me!
I like to cut my own strips, and the reason for that is I want to prewash my fabric. I am quite adamant about it, probably due to the fact that I’ve had unfortunate results (bleeding) from NOT washing my fabric. I agree that it would be great to “unroll and begin to sew,” but it’s just not for me.
I always promise myself that I will open and use a Jelly Roll but they just look so darned cute sitting there that I end up never finding the perfect project worthy of opening one!
I love jelly rolls and charm squares! My daughter is 10 and she just made her first bag with charm squares!
So it was much easier to teach her to sew and quilt with them!
Thank you for your blog! It’s great!
I think I am a “waste not” kind of gal and like to make the best use of the fabric. Jelly rolls are great! I frequently cut my own jelly rolls from fabric “leftovers” as it makes a good use of the fabric.
I have been a quilter for 16 yrs now, and I have a confession to make….I have NEVER used a jelly roll! But, a few weeks ago I cam across this jelly roll challenge. So now I need to buy my first jelly roll, cause I already have 2 or 3 ideas :)
I love the fast and easy jelly rolls. I have so little time to actually sit and sew, I just love the convenience that the jelly roll brings!!
Hi Anne,
I don’t like to waste fabric…on the other hand I hate wasting time cutting heaps of strips…I love the way jelly roll look and feel. They also allow me to indulge in a greater range of fabrics…though I think the plain ones would be very useful (and so much easier) to use than cut cut cut :)
Hugs, Sharon
I should be on the time side, but waste not, want not is me!! I haven’t used a jelly roll yet in any of my work, but have cut strips for projects. I could see quite easily that a jelly roll would be conserving my time but at this point, can’t get around the price. Maybe if I win one and see how easy it is – I could change my mine ….. (hint!!)LOL
I love jelly rolls because of the time they save me!
Just started working with jelly rolls recently. Love the speed and time saved with them.
I love pre cuts, especially jelly rolls. I like to do as little cutting as possible plus you get the variety of one entire line! Love them!
I tend to make use of what I have, or use it as a base to add to, however I am sure I can happily make do with the Jelly Roll you are offering :) Happy crafting, Jenny
I LOVE jelly rolls but they are rare in my rural area & evpensive. I have never have 1 but I was able to use a strip from 1 and how wonderful to just ZOOM along nice crisp fabric…I do have bins of strips I have cut in every size but they sit waiting almost glaring and are material of used clothes so in the back of your mind one thinks it would be MORE fun to have a new jelly roll of a nice material not time worn….:(
I love jelly rolls & precuts but can buy often. I have scraps cut from what ever.
No waste for me, fabric in France are soooooooooo expensive !
I use both precuts and cut my own! Love the whole process. Last time I used a jelly roll it was for the Carry Me Bag!
Both! The last project I designed with pre-cuts, used one jelly roll and one layer cake, and as long as you didn’t make any cutting mistakes, only needed yardage for borders, had very little leftovers, and made about a 90″ quilt! (I was challenging myself to see how large a quilt I could make with the two fabric packs.)
Definitely a “time well spent” gal where jelly rolls are concerned. I just love having all those pretty strips ready to be admired and petted and imagined into a wonderful quilt!
I have never used a Jelly Roll so I guess I can’t say one way or the other, but would love to try if I win. Then I could say for certain! Thank you!
I’m a little of both – it depends on my current mood.
I’m a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll(ala Donnie and Marie)! I’m both, it just depends on the project…although, I don’t have a problem getting rid of small bits and pieces of leftover fabrics. I even get rid of fabrics I’ve fallen out of love with.
I am a waste not want not gal. I started sewing clothes when I was about twelve. My mom alway made me beautiful dreses and tops. I continued to make my own dresses and tops until I got fed up with pattern prices and ended up with ill fitting garments. I made plenty of dresses and outfits for my girls when they were litlle as well. I ventured into quilting as a means to use up scraps galore. scraps from garment sewing are some crazy leftovers of all kinds of shapes. Anyway I was amazed when I first attended a quilt show with my quilt friends and saw what was out there! I thought quilts were simply a means to use scraps! Boy have I gotten over that one! My quilt friends love to tease me about the scraps I continue to save. I love all the patterns now for charm squares, Jelly rolls and honey buns because I can utilize my scraps to the fullest. I have no problem whatsoever feeding my quilt disease but have actually put a moratorium on all fabric and pattern purchases until I catch up a bit…well I may need backing or some background fabric or binding….but for the MOSTPART 2011 is a year to enjoy all I have “gathered”. A great gal at a quilt shop in Kauai said it is not hoarding but as island women go to the hills
to “gather” flowers we “gather” fabric. I am currently organizing my stash. Over the last year I have started appliqué which is another reason to save scraps. You are partly to blame/thank for that one!!!! However working with precuts are a joy.
I think I have missed out on the whole jelly roll bandwagon–I have to try them—I hate to cut fabric—-and there are more fabric choices in the rolls===thanks for the chance to win …
I never used to use kits or precuts, but now I focus more on getting the project done. As my friend used to say, not everything we make is going to be in the Smithsonian so just get
started and make it. Good advice I think. Thanks for a chance to win a jelly roll.
I am a use what I have person and save money. I like to cut my own; give me a jelly roll and I would love.
I’ve not bought a lot of precuts but the “plain” ones I think are marvelous, especially for piecing with the jelly rolls, quick start is definitely “a good thing”. So many great books are out there for the precuts now–designers are such smart folks! I’d love a chance to win a plain jelly roll, thanks so much for the giveaway.
Anne, I love every step of making a quilt, even cutting the pieces…But I’m all for anything that will get me sitting in front of my sewing machine quicker and the Moda Solid Jelly Roll selection has been calling my name for a while now. Every since I got my sewing room set up. So…I guess I’m on the “Time Well Spent” side of this fence. The Lily and Will jelly rolls are beautiful. Hugs…
oh dear, what am I? lol….. I am a scrappy girl, who doesn’t like to cut very much. so I do love those jelly rolls and charm packs! in fact I made a deal with a friend who loves to cut and I love to bind. so I bind her quilts and she cuts out kits for me! and we are both happy!!! thanks for putting my name in the hat!
lorene
I think the precuts are so pretty. The convenience is secondary. I just love the way they look. So pretty.
Darc
xxoo
I think I’m somewhere in the middle. I do love to use Moda precuts- not so much to save time cutting, but because I like a little of each fabric without having to buy a fat quarter bundle.
Thanks for the chance to win. Lily and Will is so pretty!!!
I love all that food!!! And Moda took all the calories out. I guess that’s why I use precuts so much!
I’m all about ‘rolling’ with the punches and saving time where I can. I’ll take the help where I can get it!
Plus, I’m a little lazy when it comes to cutting. You said be honest! :-)
I’m on the fence. I love the convenience and time-saving aspect of pre-cuts. Every time I look at a jelly roll or charm pack from one of my favorite Moda designers, I feel the siren call to buy one. On the other hand, I don’t like waste of any sort and feel guilty as I hug my ribbon tied jelly rolls.
I just love to look at all the pretty strips and think about what I could make. Jelly rolls are fun!
Hi Anne…I love the pre cut fabric…jelly rolls & charm packets…especially now with a 19 mo old son…I need the time to sew if I want to get something done. : )
I’d really rather use a jelly roll, but right now i’m getting ready to cut some strips from bone yardage instead of buying a cream jelly roll…only to save $$ since I’ve bought too much fabric lately.
I love the Moda pre-cuts and use them whenever possible!
Well, I’ve bought the pre-cuts, but I don’t use them, they look so nice all tied up. I quess one of these days,I’ll have to use them.
Time well spent but I also have a hard time opening jelly rolls and FQ towers.
Sure would love to have more Lilly and Will fabric though!
I like the pre cuts for the convience, you can cut for a project and with a little twist and turn produce something totally different. Lorraine
I am a process kind of sewer and don’t mind cutting ( and figuring out how many strips to cut for what I need. It makes my sister crazy! She is not a math person.) But there is definitely something satisfying about unrolling those strips and having at it! I absolutely love the variety you get with a jelly roll with no effort on your part whatsoever!
Anne,
I am all for using Jelly Rolls for ease and quickness. However, I must say that the Moda Jelly Rolls are always very accurate and precise in measurement. Some of the cheaper brands are not and it is so frustrating to discover that the size is incorrect after commencing a quilt.
Love your patterns!
Jan.
I have not worked with a jelly roll before. I think it would be great, just haven’t thought to buy one before for a project. Great idea, hope I win.
I want to just sew! Although I just can’t seem to throw away scraps. I too have an overflowing bin that taunts me but just don’t ever seem to use it.
I like to cut my own fabric well except for the1/8 stuff. Would be fun to try the pre-cut
I love jelly rolls! What is it about them that makes you want to buy them and sew them up! I think I am a tweener about time and wasting fabric – I hate to waste but also hate to waste time!
To be honest I’m in between. There are times I love the jelly rolls (can be good time saver) but I really don’t mind cutting my own strips and getting just the look I want. I’m kind of fussy like that and I like the whole process.
Laura T
I think I’m a little bit of both. I LOVE to play with jelly rolls and other precuts, but I also love cutting into yardage and trying to figure out the best way to get the most out of my fabric. Love Lilly & Will! Can’t wait to get my Park Lane order! Thanks.
I love jelly rolls! What is it about them that makes you want to buy them… and make them into beautiful quilts. I guess I like to save time and not waste fabric just like anyone else but sometimes the overwhelming desire to sew, sew, sew just takes over!
I’m a let me sew kind of gal. I’d much rather be sewing then cutting. I’m with Doodlebug Gail it is hard to undo the ribbons or whatever. I love looking at the fabric in the Jelly Rolls.
Love your blog always-you are the best! :) Marietta
I love, love, love the precuts. Especially the jelly rolls and layer cakes. I like to get right to the fun part the sewing! whoever came up with the jelly roll is a genius.
I love both ways….but right now as a result of an accident I am limited and the only way I can sew is to use precuts. So I LOVE precuts!!! So sewing is not only part of my physical therapy, but I consider it emotional therapy. I NEED precuts.
Precuts! I am so loving precuts.
I love the Jelly Rolls but when they arrive at my house I have a really hard time undoing that ribbon. Once it’s unwrapped I’m OK but it takes me a really long time to get to that stage. The same goes for bundles of FQ’s and little Charm Packs.
I usually buy fat quarters and use those from stash. Rarely do I use pre-cuts but I love them when I can afford them….
Hi, there,
I am definitely a waste not want not person. I love scrappy quilts so I find precuts like jelly rolls kind of cramp my style. Now if I had lots and lots of jelly rolls to choose from (hint, hint) I might feel differently because then I would have lots of choices….
I’m a fan of pre-cuts, but to be honest – I haven’t seen the white or cream ones any where. I would probably buy a pre-cut but with a neutral buy yardage.
Life is short. I go for the sweets-jelly rolls for me!
I love precuts as it makes starting a projects so much quicker and I get a glimpse of the whole range. I particularly like charm packs as I can pull out my favourite fabrics and buy yardage online and not have any surprises arrive!
However, my frugal side shows, because I work out the cost of precut basics versus off the bolt and choose off the bolt. Fabric is so expensive in Australia that every dollar counts!
I hate to cut into my fabrics and save practically everything. I just have discovered an addiction to precuts and have some charm packs on the way:) I haven’t played with the jelly rolls yet- but am looking forward to it:)
I love the pre-cuts, they make it so easy and they are always colour co-ordinated perfect, greatest innovation since the rotary cutter and board….
Although I really LOVE jelly rolls, I find that most of my projects with white or cream involve random pieces so I get out my old yeard of stand-by white/cream and start cutting various widths for my various pieces. However, given a free jelly roll, I could easily be persuated to use the pre-cuts. Then again, I might just look at it lovingly and not be able to cut into it. Love your designs and fabrics Anne!!
I’m with you. I want to tear those packages apart and start to sew.
Anne,
I am with you – I want to start sewing immediately – so precuts for me!
I do not have much time to sew, so precuts save time. Precuts also save money, no miscuts. I am glad they came out with the solids precuts, makes my life easier.
I enjoy the precuts, especially the jelly rolls. It’s so great to have all of the fabric from a line – even if it is just strips, they are so beautiful.
Hi, and thanks for the chance to win! I’m a newbie in quilting, and have just recently discovered the precuts. Pure genius! Love anything that will help me get it right!
Desi
I don’t like waste and tend to save my scraps, but I bought a couple of jelly rolls recently and am looking forward to making a quilt with them. I think most quilters are open to trying something new!
I love using precuts, but I don’t mind spending time cutting beautiful fabrics either- it just gives me more time to enjoy looking at them! :)
I love the concept of jelly rolls, but they are so expensive here in Canada I just drool at them. Thanks for the chance to win some!
I really enjoy the precuts–it is time well spent. But, have to admit I seem to enjoy the process more when I am working with yardage. Hmmmm split personality I guess
hummm, my comment vanished??? Well the simple version is I can’t I love the precuts but I love them wrapped so cute with their ribbon and have a hard time using them!
I try to save every little piece of cut fabric. They have come in handy in small projects and appliques. I also share them with my two daughters who find all sorts of art projects to use these in. I haven’t tried too many pre-cuts–jelly rolls look fun!
I love all the precuts. I like the challenge of making an entire quilt using the precut fabric, and adding a little from my own stash.
I wouldn’t mind using precut fabric. I guess, it comes down to the fact that it costs more to do so. Three kids in college makes for a tight budget. I try to use everything I have though of course – I do have to buy more yardage when it is “called for”.
I seem to go both ways, I love precuts, but then will cut up my stash and leave the precuts looking so perfect.
I like Jelly Rolls for some things but they would never be a permanent substitute for doing it myself. I like the whole process of quilting, choosing the pattern, finding just the right fabrics for the look I want, washing, cutting – the full meal deal if you will. I guess I’m old-fashioned that way but quilting for me is not just about sewing – in fact, that’s the part I like the least!
Precuts are the best invention since the rotary cutter! LOL! I love buying and using them. My time is precious and the sooner I can start sewing the better. And, most of the precut patterns use almost all the precut so I don’t end up with a lot of scraps, which I like!
I’m a “time well spent” quilter. I LOVE the convenience of the Moda pre-cuts. And I LOVE the luxury of having a little piece of each fabric in a line with the pre-cuts…
I just used my first jelly roll and couldn’t believe the time it saved me and also how my hands didn’t hurt as much. I love the pre-cuts.
I like to use both. I don’t mind cutting my own when there is time, but it sure makes things go more quickly when you can grab some pre cuts to work!!
For a solid color, I’ll cut my own strips. It just seems more economical. But I do tend to buy a ton of jelly rolls. I love getting all of the different fabrics together.
ive always cut my own fabric, but recently i have started to use pre-cuts and my word they are amazing, so quick and easy and also it lets you see all the designs of the fabric instead of buying it in big pieces, i still like to cut my fabric, but i do reallllly like pre-cuts (especially charm squares so cute!)
I hate to waste fabric. I save those small pieces just sure that I will find a use for them…someday LOL. However, I do like jelly rolls! Quick and easy with pre-coordinated fabrics–what’s not to love.
I love precuts…especially jellyrolls. They make starting your project so quick. And then the best part, it is all coordinated for you. Everything goes together. Love it!
Lily & Will in Jelly Rolls??? Oh. My. Goodness. Just too delicious!!! I hate to waste fabric – in fact, I kind of hate to even cut fabric because it is so beautiful. Maybe pre-cut is the way to go for me. Of course, those jelly rolls are so pretty all rolled up like that – I kind of hate to pull them apart, too!! (Okay, this is sort of pathetic, huh?)
I like the cutting. But even bigger on my list is being able to prewash. Still, if I win, I’ll give it my all to use the jelly rolls!
My solution to getting rid of scraps that you feel are too big to trash but not big enough to really be useful? Put a paper bag near your cutting table and throw those “in-between” pieces in it. When it is full, roll down the top and give it to someone else!!! They will be thrilled and you don’t feel guilty!
I think solid neutral pre-cuts are the best idea! I haven’t used them yet … Thank you for the giveaway!
I love precuts (especially jellyrolls and layer cakes) but there are times when a project needs the added “zing” of a stand-alone fabric….then it’s a joy to pull that perfect fabric out of my stash and cut into it. This really puts the icing on the jelly roll or layer cake!
While I love the precuts and use a lot of them for particular patterns, there is still something about the process of getting ready to start a quilt and getting all the pieces cut out first. I love the natural flow and journey of making a quilt and taking that first step. That Moda jelly roll would fit right into my french braid quilt. Awesome giveaway
I just bought my first white jelly roll, I think that I am going to love using it rather than the time consuming cutting of strips.
I’m a waste not type of person so I have never bought a jelly roll, but it would be fabulous not to have to cut strips! If I’m using a whole strip then there would be no waste anyway!
I love to use the jelly rolls because it gives me more time to sew and not have to cut. I never have a very long time to devote to my projects so any short cut really aids in my creating.
I love to use the jelly rolls because I don’t have to take the few moments I have to cut. I can start sewing sooner and make better progress on my project.
I like precuts because I like to play with shapes and they eliminate the step of cutting the shapes out. Sometimes though I like the challenge of figureing out how Im going to cut out the strips or squares.
I want very much to open the pack and sew but of course I usually cut strips from my stash. Love to own this cute jelly rolls. Chrisb.
I kind of fit both categories. I love using the precuts. They are so beautiful and fun to use with all those different fabrics, and so easy! But then I find myself trying to use up every bit of the scraps left over to make something else!
Thanks for a fun giveaway.
I actually enjoy the time spent cutting fabrics. The prep time is relaxing for me.
I go both ways. When I can afford it I buy precuts, but the rest of the time I go into my stash and cut my own strips. Thanks for the chance to win some Will & Grace.
I’m a “time well spent” kinda gal. Besides Moda can cut those strips much straighter than I ever could – and faster! Oh, and don’t you just love the precut dust that ends up all over your clothes! I do! It means I was playing with fabric! It’s like a badge of honor among quilters!
I try to be a “waste not, want not”, and depending on what’s going on in my life, I am. However, there are so many projects that I’m just so anxious to begin, that “time well spent” helps me get right into it without spending all that prep time. I would dearly LOVE to be the recipient of the cream jelly roll — I see a new beginning in my future!
I love pre-cuts, but more because then I get a print of a whole line than because of time savings. I don’t mind cutting out fabric. I’m a very “of the moment” quilter, doing whatever part I feel like doing at the time. I definitely don’t like to waste fabric and cherish even my smallest scraps. My favorite, favorite, favorite part is always planning the color and design, whether I use pre-cuts or not.
I’m a “time well spent” quilter. I love to use precuts and definitely not a lot of fussy cuts. I want to get right to sewing and see my creation come to life.
uhmmm … my answer is “yes”
i don’t want to waste time OR fabric – so i like precuts AND i like yardage … using precuts is time will spent and cutting fabric is fabric well spent
I love the pre-cuts as it’s a quick way to add/build stash and get a wide variety of fabrics. Since I’m a beginner quilter I’m still figuring a lot of things out. :-)
Cynthia
I am definitely a waste not, want not quilter. I really think about and work out the best way to use the yardage with the biggest scraps left. I can’t describe the feeling it gives me when I am successful and have a lot of leftover fabric … just that much more for something else. :)
I tend to lean towards ‘waste not, want not’ because I love scraps, but I have a large collection of charm packs because its a nice way to get a variety of small pieces fabrics for applique or charm quilts. One of the things I hate about the precuts is the pinked edges…I find a straight edge easier to cut along when I want to do precise rotary cutting. Of course, it could just be my eyes and age! I haven’t tried jelly rolls yet.
I love using precuts! I have rheumatoid arthritis and it saves me a lot using precuts plus it saves lots of time.
Ooooh, I love all the pre-cuts and the yardage. I’m a definite fabri-holic! I just have to have it, no matter what form it comes in.
But I must admit I have trouble opening and decimating those beautiful jelly rolls and charm packs and turnovers and layer cakes. They’re delicious just as they are. :D
I love the jelly rolls and have purchased some. To be perfectly frank I have always wanted to do the math and find out how much more per yard I am paying to purchase fabric in this manner. I do agree and also love to see them sitting on the shelf all dressed up and tempting me to play. When I undress a jelly roll I keep the Moda twill tape and hang it up with the little paper tag as a reminder of what used to be in that wrapping. Just a really silly thing I started doing for no reason at all. But then aren’t quilt studios (ok, sewing room) supposed to be silly and non sensical? I think so!
I love it all, doesn’t matter what, I am just a real fabric lover and a huge modafan.
I so love the precuts! I like having most of a fabric line together to make my project. BUT. . .I really enjoy the creative process of having a fun treasure hunt for just the right fabrics for a project as well. . . and I do save my scraps! There, I admitted it!
I’m a new quilter and just discovered jelly rolls! My husband thinks I’m talking about donuts :) I love to be able to sew and go, without all the cutting! Oh, Lily and Will is my favorite fabric ever…love the colors.
Jellyrolls are my favorite! Aside of being so easy, fast and useful, they are wonderful to look at sitting on my shelves….so decorative!!! I love them…
Bev/Mo
I do love precuts but sometimes there is nothing like the feeling of cutting fabric…not that I want to cut 40 something strips…so heck yes…would love a win!!! Thanks Anne!
Pre-cut fabrics are great, but when I get a jelly roll, I love the way it looks with all of the fabrics lined up for viewing the entire collection, so I don’t want to take it apart. I sometimes keep it intact just so I can admire it! If I really like a fabric, I want to by yardage. With the bigger piece of fabric, I can have strips or squares, and still have more leftover for another quilt!
I am in between. I love the precuts, but keep every scrap of fabric. You never know when you might need to cover a button! Thank you for the great inspiration.
I’m a huge fan of precuts (only if they are cut correctly! I got my first packet of charm squares that were off….but MODA is a great company and they quickly replaced them!) I’m work full time and am a mom to a tiny person who takes up a LOT of time, so to me, I’d rather spend my precious sewing time sewing….not cutting.
I use jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm squares as often as I can! (and it’s a great way to get an entire line of fabrics as inezpensively as possible!)
Pre-cut is the way for me. My cutting skills are not the greatest, so pre-cuts are made for me.
Pre-cuts are the way to go. With busy work lives, family lives, kids and pets to care for, a girl needs every advantage she can get! Thanks for your amazing and wonderful creativity. It makes me happy!

I am a pre-cut fan. My cutting skills aren’t the greatest, so pre-cut fabrics are a gift to me.
I love pre-cuts – because I absolutely hate cutting fabric. I can’t cut a straight strip, so the jelly rolls I just love! The rest of the pre-cuts are so much fun too!. Kudos to Moda for paving the way for pre-cuts!
I would much rather dive right in than sit and cut for hours. As for waste, I tried to save my scraps because it seemed like it was the thing to do and a little sacrilegious to throw them away. I ended up with bags of little pieces of this’s and that’s and came to the conclusion that I’d never use them in a million years. I brought them to one of my guild meetings and they were snapped up lickety split. I no longer save my scraps.
Now, Ann…having written this novel, I would really love to win a jelly roll. After all, time’s a wastin’. *wink*
I can be either… I love my Moda pre-cuts and use them all the time… It’s great to have a head start on the cutting just so I can start sewing straight away… It’s fun designing patterns using the sweet cuts so I’m going to visit the Moda site to check out the challenge…
However, I can also sit and stitch intricate blocks…
I’ll be very honest with you, Anne. I won’t buy a Moda Jelly Roll anymore. The strips are sometimes wonky…you know, a BAD cut where you get just a bit of a “V” shape. My friends have had the same experience. Honestly, for the PRICE Moda charges AND the fact that they are laser cut, this should not be happening. Shame on Moda.
I am definitely a pre-cut user. Love jelly rolls, charm paks, etc and just bought my first candy bar from moda. Thought about asking for an accuquilt GO for Christmas but then think how many jelly rolls, turnovers etc I can buy for $500.00.
Love your designs and your blog.
I like jelly rolls, honey buns and charm packs, because they are perfect for scrappy looking quilts. Especially for small projects like mug rugs or mini quilts. They offer the possibility of getting a nice range of perfect fitting different designs for a small prize ;o)
And my selfcut strips over the whole width are mostly imperfect especially near the fold ;o)
I don’t mind cutting, I love gadgets and lots of rulers. But there is something so alluring about the pre-cuts. I too love to rip open a package with Jelly Rolls or Layer Cakes. Begin careful not to get drool on the fabric I to see the coordinated colors and prints and start to imagine what they can become. I just bought my first book of pattern for pre-cuts and I’m always thinking how they can fit into a design.

I don’t like waste but I have to say I just LOVE Jelly Rolls and Charm Squares. Having just spent hours cutting out little bits from fat quarters, I kept dreaming of how much easier it would have been with a Jelly Roll!
I love pre-cuts, but it’s often hard to use them…what if I would regret using them on this project, may be I should have saved them for another project…? On the other hand, I think I am a little of both!
I am a precut jelly roll, charm pack person. I am a challenged cutter. The rotary cutter does not like me I think. I do save scraps though:) My daughter loves to use them! Thanks!
I would love to have everything precut and ready to go! I have never tried a jelly roll yet, but I would sure love to:>)
I am a waste not. Keep every little scrap of fabric for hopefully another project. I do love the quick varity of the precuts though.
Jelly roll, hands (with sticky fingers) down! No muss, no fuss. Who wants to spend time cutting when it’s done for you.
Rita
I have never actually used a jelly roll, but am very intrigued by them. The cream and white ones especially appeal to me.
Cutting is my least favorite part of quilting, so I love precuts. Moda had a great idea, that’s for sure. The other thing I like is getting a piece of the whole collection — it makes my fabric addition more controllable since I don’t have to but half yards!
I’m making my very first jelly roll quilt right now, and I didn’t even whimper when I merrily skipped the part where I would have had to cut all those strips!! However, I did not use a jelly roll for the background fabrics, and I grumbled about it the whole time I was cutting all those strips. Now I’m a believer, jelly rolls whenever possible!!
I love to save time! I work 2 jobs – 1 fulltime and 1 part time, so if I can save time by not cutting fabric….I am there! Instint gradification for me!
I am a time person too! When I saw the white jelly rolls, I was so happy at the thought of not doing all that cutting!
Precuts all the way! If I can grab 5 minutes to sew I want to be able to see a result. Maybe one day I’ll have the time to enjoy all the cutting….
Hi! Good question! I usually do scrappy quilts, so I can cut what I want. BUT I love the ease of having strips and squares already cut for me. Guess I am a little of both, it depends on the project. :P
Love, love, love precuts. Saves time and I get the whole line of fabric. None of my LQS carry them, so I always buy mine online, always at a discounted price.
Haven’t used the solid precuts, the cost/time saved does not come out in my favor.
My all time favorite, is a fat quarter bundle. Pricey even at a discount, but can cut a jelly roll, layer cake, and some 3″ strips from each fat quarter. Then I can use them anyway I like and get some scraps too. Thanks for the giveaway, love your fabric.
I love using Jellyrolls and charm packages. It is so easy to just sit and sew and ENJOY without the extra time cutting. I keep some scraps, however I have someone I pass most of mine on to. There are some great patterns out there for pre-cuts and it seems more are designing around them now.
I love my scraps and I do enjoy cutting my own fabric, I don’t know why, I just do. Pre cuts are good for the time savings, too though. I guess I enjoy both ways!
I love using the pre-cuts, but guilt usually wins out over desire, so I have been trying to use my stash as much as possible. Moda makes it so difficult! That company is such an enabler!! :) Of course, I suppose if the pre-cuts were already in my stash, it would still be stash busting to use them…
I’m a “waste not, want not” kind of girl but jelly rolls don’t seem to waste fabric and they definitely save time :-)
Would love to sew up some Lily and Will!
It all depends on what I’m making, if the print is a jelly roll, I’ll go with the jelly roll of the solid fabric as well. I saw the Lily and Will jelly rolls on the Moda site a couple days ago, and it certainly made me smile!
Hi Anne
I’m a “waste not” kind of person really. I just hate wasting fabric…. in fact, when I finish snowbound, I will use all my scraps for the Henrietta BOM quilt. I think it will look really lovely. However, I would love to try a jelly roll. We just can’t get them here in Cyprus, so Anne, please pick me!!
Hugs, Sue from Cyprus x x
I don’t mind cutting my jelly rolls…especially if i want a certain colorway…
I haven’t tried the cream/white jelly rolls but am thinking I need to try them since I have very little quilting time!
I’ve only used precuts a couple of times, and I did enjoy not cutting immensely. However, I guess I’m a little tight with my money, therefore I usually cut my own. It seems that even with cutting, I still have a large scrap bag.
I had surgery on my right shoulder awhile back and have problems cutting fabric. So when precuts came out, I was jumping for joy.
I have just recently started playing with the jelly rolls. Oh my how easy that makes it! However, I cannot bear to part with scraps other than to gift them to someone else. Over the holidays my daughter and grand daughter gifted me with a day of co ordinating my civil wars. They pulled out any odd pieces or small scraps. These I am now cutting down to 1″ strips for a Courthouse Steps. What can I say??
I really like the pre-cuts, especially the jelly rolls. No more crooked strips!!! I guess I’m going to have to order my all white jelly rolls as the local quilt shop that sold them is closed. That’s two quilt shops within my area closing in the last year!!! Big frowny face!!! :-(
I’m a little bit of both worlds, depends on how many ends the candle is burning and then I go from there. I do save a bunch of scraps, but I like to save time where I can.
Love the precuts! Let’s skip that cutting and move right into creating!
I’ve never actually used a jelly roll, but there’s no time like the present to try one! If you pick me, I’ll make my decision after I use it!
I had to think about this one, but I believe I’m both! I love the precuts, but more because I get to see the whole line, which my LQS may or may not stock, but I also like yardage so I can combine my own. And I do have scrap drawers – not as organized as I’d like (someday), but 2 1/2″ squares in one, strips in another and lots of yet to be cut down scraps in 2 more.
Hi Anne!
I’m a time well spent girl too. I am frugal with my fabric, but realistic there may not be another purpose for some of those little pieces!
I like to plan my projects. As I work at my job 45 hrs/wk, I plan for each step, unfortunately equals about 1 to 1.5 hrs/evening of sewing. So either sewing and pressing or pressing and pinning or pinning and sewing.
Slow and steady gets the job done. Of course, precuts help me meet my evening goals much more quickly!
Thanks for the giveaway,
Take care, Leslie
I’m a time better spent. Especially with a newborn baby girl. However I haven’t used any jelly rolls… Yet! I would love to try it. I would think binding would be so much easier. Thanks for the great giveaway!
I have very little time to sew having two little ones at home so when I do try to get something done, it has to be quick and easy! I have to make good use of every free moment I have. I am also cheap so I make good use of every scrap I have too!
I like both. Jelly rolls and other precuts are great when that’s the exact amount of fabric you need/want. But I also like having leftovers to incorporate into other projects. I’ve done it both ways and I suppose I’ll continue on with no real preference and often with no real plan ;)
Love the Willie and Lil jelly rolls, though. I may have to look for a project…
I don’t like wasting anything including my time!!
I love pre-cuts!
I don’t like the prep work to I’m a time well spent girl. Now to just find more time.
HELLO ANNE, I’M IN BETWEEN-LOVE THE NEW PRE-CUTS, BUT CAN’T BARE TO WASTE ANY SCRAPS SO I CUT THOSE INTO SHAPES TOO !
I’m in the first group. I don’t like to waste but I love precuts I just try to use them wisely.
Hi Anne:
I just adore the precut fabrics. Although, I have to remember to buy yardage of at least one of the fabrics in the line so I have backing!
I love being able to open the jelly rolls, charm packs or honeybuns and just start sewing away. I’ve even purchased the solids so that I have sashing and border fabric without cutting. Well worth ever dime to buy them…and I love how the rolls look in my fabric drawer, all lined up like fancy soldiers waiting their turn to become something fabulous!
Have a great day and thanks for the chance to win your fabric. It’s gorgeous!
xoxo
Donna
I think I am a little of both. I love precuts, I think cutting is the worst part of quilting. But I don’t like to waste either so I keep all my scraps, even the tiny ones. These little scraps are great for small applique pieces.
I am planning my jelly roll challenge quilt now and am so excited about it!
I have never used jelly rolls…I do love layer cakes and charm packs. But I think it has more to do with the variety than the fact that they are precuts.
I like time well spent… but I have the hardest time even opening my jelly rolls. They’re so perfect and I know that they’re beautiful inside. I never even thought about white or cream precut but what a smart idea. And I bet I’d be able to open one of those
Hi Anne:
My mother lived through the depression. I was brought up to conserve and not waste something that could be used for something else. She was an original “green” consumer. So, I tend to be conservative when it comes to discarding scraps. On the other hand, cutting fabric is very therapeutic. I get to touch, measure, touch again, see it transform into different designs, and touch again! I love using Jelly Rolls and precuts (especially the Layer Cakes) but I also love cutting my own. It just gives me more time to touch fabric! Love, Mary
I love pre-cuts! I think they save a lot of time … but I also make sure I use every last bit of them. I ended up with 128 bonus HSTs from my last layer cake project, so sometimes an extra seam here and there can result in great use of what would have been discarded otherwise!
I don’t like to waste fabric and I wish I had 36 hours in my day sEw I’m not sure which category I fall in….probably the ‘don’t like to waste fabric’ one….but that’s not to say I don’t buy pre-cuts….as I have bought many. I must say the 2 jelly rolls on the cake plate sure look sweet. Thanks for the chance to win a sweet jelly roll. Have a wonderful day Anne.
I’m all for using pre-cuts if it works in the pattern. I don’t choose patterns only because they are “pre-cut” friendly. But, if it works, I’m all for it!
Love all the pastries…honey buns, jelly rolls, layer cakes. But, to save money, I usually buy the yardage and cut it myself. Cutting is definitely not my favorite part of quilting though, and if I could afford it, I’d buy the precuts. Besides, they are so pretty!!
I hate cutting my fabric! I love opening up a jelly roll and diving into a project!!!!
Actually, I’m both. It depends on the day, the project, and what else is going on in my life! I, too, love to get to the sewing part right away, so pre-cuts are nice! but I also love needle-turn applique, so often the pre-cuts don’t work for that. Those luscious strips, though, would make great sashing! Or, I’m certain I could find something else fun to do with them :-) !!
I would love to use precuts but my local store doesn’t carry them :(
I’m a novice in quilting, so I don’t have experience with a jelly roll, but it seems quite handy to use a jelly roll, aspecialy for the patterns that are designed for 1 jelly roll. And I think the colours in 1 roll are great for combining with each other.Besides all this, it is very hard for me to do the cutting of fabric because of my fibromyalgia, so anything that is allready cut seems to be handy for me to use.
I am a “just want to have fun” kind of quilter, and I love jellyrolls because using them I save time cutting stripes. I have two jellyrolls now that I am having so much fun with. Amazing how many small projects, table runners aso you can get out of them :)
I have yet to use any precuts as the local stores carry very limited quantities, if any at all (ugh!). I think I’d thoroughly enjoy a pre-cut, however! I have a multitude of patterns that call for pre-cuts, so I’m just figuring out how to get them!
I love using pre-cuts, mostly the jelly rolls and honey buns. I often use the jelly roll for binding as well as blocks.
I love precuts!! They are so easy to work with and save a lot of time. you see the result much quicker. Where I live I can’t find the white ones and it would be a pleasure to have the solid precut too.
Lotta in Sweden
Cutting is my least favorite part of the quilting process yet I still haven’t jumped on the “pre-cut wagon”.I’m not exactly sure why.
I’m definately a “time well spent” gal. I love precuts. I like being able to just start sewing and not spending ages cutting.
I never think about buying Jelly Rolls, so I’ve always cut my own. You make them sound so quick and easy…guess I need to get started with using them.
I used precuts (charm pack) for the first time just this week. I am hooked! My least favorite part of quilting is the cutting, so I was thrilled at how quickly I was able to start sewing. (Not to mention, they have all the fabrics coordinated for you, so you don’t have to agonize over whether or not something “goes” with something else.) And there are so many patterns out there now that are based off of precuts!! I have never used a jelly roll before, but that is next on my list!!
I love the instant gratification of a jelly roll quilt. It’s fun to spread out those strips and start planning. Soon you have a gorgeous quilt top finished. Now if Moda could come up with a way for them to quilt themselves!
Yes I do hate to waste fabric…I have all my scraps organized. I haven’t used a lot of precuts…but sure could use them to save time. I am using the 2-1/2 precut strips right now for my Hexie quilt…sure is quick & easy.
Marg
I would love to only use precuts, but my budget prevents me. I don’t mind cutting strips now, because I know I’ll be beginning a new project! I guess I have more time than money:))
I guess I am a waste not want not, as I have never used a jelly roll yet. I’d love to give them a try :-)
I love using precuts!! Time is short…I’d rather spend time sewing than cutting.
I HATE cutting fabric. I’m not sure why, but I only started my first jelly roll quilt last night. It was nice to skip cutting the strips. For me, it’s all about the time!
I guess I’m in between. I LOVE to use precuts. It’s just so (sew)easy and fun. On the other hand I don’t like to throw any fabric away so I use up my scraps a lot.
I really don’t like wasting fabric, guess that is why my scrap bin in bursting full. I just can’t bear to throw out scraps. I do like to save time but I think I dislike wasting fabric more.
