Spring Fever!
Sunny, warm, and beautiful. That was our weather this weekend and I actually got outside for a bit! Strange feeling since I’ve been in the studio for weeks. Another storm is due on Tuesday and we may get some hail! Hail in the middle of April! Don’t know how the weatherman knows this in advance.
I love roses and every year I plant 5 or 6 more rose bushes. It’s finally starting to pay off. My roses are all starting to bloom, so if we get hail on Tuesday I hope it will be gentle.
A quick trip to our local farmer’s market was called for. They have the best bread!
And veggies of course…
And they were selling orchids! Beautiful orchids!
I may be able to grow roses, but every time I try with orchids, they never bloom again. Any orchid advice out there? If you think I should give it a try I’ll buy one next week.
My son was supposed to arrive from Germany today and of course his flight was cancelled. I’m wondering how the airlines will ever catch up when they do start flying. Mother Nature is amazing and definitely in control!

I grow my Phalaenopsis, here in Taiwan, on my balcony. They like to hang in a draft and I water them about twice a week. After flowering don’t feed them any fertilizer but give them a rest. Don’t put them in full sunshine or they will get sunburn! Winter flowering Phalaenopsis like cool nights in order to develop flowers.

I am green with envy. My roses are still have the bare root look to them…they are not convinced that it is spring. I did plant some petunias…they are the only flowers that seem to survive the cold nights. Although it was raining I did some planting. Once it stopped I sprayed some deer repellant on my flowers, we’ll see how good it works!

lavender is the top photo & a gorgeous plant..the colors of the photos even frame you hues of `pink’ :)
I have every kind of lavender possible that grow in the hot southern heat of the SE of the US. & I get horrible hail several times with tornadoes this times of the year it shreds everything in it’s path..cover your precious things outside if your even think it is a possibility.

I have a brown thumb but am actually doing well with an orchid plant. I just put a couple of ice cubes in every third day, tied the stems up so not drooping, and have it out of direct sunlight. Give it a try!

Anne, your roses are beautiful! I would encourage you to try orchids again. All the other advice sounds like what I do. My best success has been with buying larger pots of orchids, I have one a few years old that reblooms over and over through the year with short periods of dormancy and has a very long bloom time in spite of cold climates. I let dry between waterings and never give too much at once. I have one or two smaller pots which have rebloomed but not as profusely as the large plant I have. Mine are in a southern window w/ light diffused by tree branches.
I too hope your son makes it home soon. We were stranded in Barcelona on sunday after canceled flight, and then managed to get a flight out yesterday after first being told we’d have to stay until this coming friday! I’m exhausted, but glad to be home!!

How wonderful, you son is comming home. The perfect treat to go with your rush to get to Market with your new lines! I grow my orchids in my south facing bathroom. The light from the small bathroom window with mirror reflection seems to work well. I wipe the leaves off weekly and mist every few days. I let it dry out. Cut the flower stem back to a joint when it is done blooming. It will not bloom again for a year but will be beautiful. I only feed every few months. It has been 1 year and I have 3 blossoms ready to open. My first success.

Greetings from Taiwan! The orchids you posted look like the varieties homegrown in my country. My husband takes care of the orchids we have at home. We originally had some like the ones you have in your article, but they died from too much heat and sunlight because we live in the South. So, you need to place them in the shade and have good air circulation, too. Preferrably the orchids can have access to morning dew. Don’t water them too much, though!
Just thought I share some our of experiences with you!

Well I pretty much kill everything EXCEPT orchids. Do not feed while they are blooming, let dry out between watering if they are inside, or covered by a porch roof. Here in south Fl. when they are done blooming, I stick ’em under a tree with partial sunlight, God waters them whenever, and they usually re-bloom on their own without any help from me.

I could never get my orchids to bloom either – but I was told that they need direct sunlight. And lo and behold a few months later I have my very first shoot of blooms! Good luck with them!

Lovely roses. My husband before we were married (in California) had the most gorgeous rose garden. He provided all of the roses for my bridal shower. They’re too finicky to grow and care for in the Midwest so no roses now. I hope you get good advice on your orchids. Your lavender and roses are just beautiful! Hope the hail doesn’t damage them too much. As far as the orchids, Phalaenopsis orchid pretty much grows in about the same way as african violets. An eastern exposure, let dry between waterings and feed (I feed lightly at each watering). Hope that information helps and I also hope your son gets home safely.
